What kind of mount was on this GP100?

I bought this GP100 used, and it had two Drilled and Tapped holes in the top strap.........any idea what was on here?

Someone also did a decent action job to the gun, it's pretty slick. I want to put a low powered optic or a red dot on this and make it a target and range gun.

A very accurate measurement of the center to center distance between the holes, and the thread size would be valuable here. Might possibly accept a MK III scope base. I'll measure mine to compare if you post the dimensions.

Any evidence that a long base used to be in place in the front sight dovetail, wear, scratches, etc?

Thanks, I'll have to measure it and I have some standard screws , 8x42 I think, that I will see if they screw into the holes. I can't tell if there was a mount in the front sight, the entire gun is pretty well worn looking :D

All of the Ruger revolvers have the same rear sight mounting and flat topstrap. I have a Stratton Custom mount with a similar hole pattern as yours. They don't make it any more and it didn't have a recoil lug. (see pic)

Any flat Ruger revolver mount with a recoil lug should work. You can drill and countersink the mount to match the hole pattern in the gun. Then you will have to get the correct screws.

An easier solution would be to put a Weigand 'no-drill' mount over the holes. That's what I would do.

It certainly isn't centered with the rear sight slot

could be camera angle. hard to tell.

hard to tell but makes no difference, just use any 'offset' or 'flat' Weaver style base plate and just drill an "extra" hole to "match" the hole pattern on that gun. If it is indeed "off center" ( the rear hole appears to be) just 'slot ' (elongate) the rear hole in the plate to allow for moving over to sight in your optic you udse.
the offset base is for the optic to be mounted further BACK, over the rear sight and the protected ears, the flat one ,you can go out, over the barrel more, depends on what floats YOUR boat..............
