Most of us know that the cartridge was always and is the '.45 Colt'. The 'Long' was added during the formative years when there was the 'shorter' .45 Schofield that caused confusion. That's the short and long of it . Today there is no confusion, but people still like to add the long as sort of a nod to the past. Gimmme a box of .45 Looooong Colt please .

Funny how you have Vaquero right in front of you and still misspell it. Like to know how that happened ... Or maybe not. Nothing special here. Just a .45 Colt original 7 1/2 barreled Vaquero.

I'm betting that the engraver was reading it off a scrap of paper the guy gave him, and the handwriting was so bad that he had to guess on the spelling. Or he screwed up. One of the two!

In this case, the nice wooden box adds no value to the package anyway, other than just the value of a nice wooden box. So, it does look like somebodies personal attempt of making a presentable, cased Vaquero. They certainly did miss the point with the mis-spelling, and further missed the point by including a Franklin Mint "Peacemaker" knife.

What was the motivation? Somebody wanted the set for themselves or to present as a gift? Or were they trying to market a cased set as official? Some folks are absolutely unconscious to detail. I see it only as a Vaquero in a nice wooden box. If I ever ended up with it, I'd turn the brass plate over, and re-inscribe the verbage correctly. This reminds me of the tattoo artist that tattoos "No Regerts" on somebodies arm, and really doesn't see the significance of a concern.
