What is the difference between the SP101 and the GP100?

Hello all,
i am thinking about my next purchase being a revolver in .357. I am new to revolvers. So what are the differences between the two. What would make one better that the other? I am considering the 3" or the 4.2" barrel.

The GP100 is a full sized revolver.

I have looked on the ruger website severl times. I was just wondering if there was some signifigant difference between them. The local gun shops I have visited have one or the other so I havn't been able to do a side by side of them. I will probably go the gun show in a couple of weeks and see if I can compare them side by side and see which feels better.

Then I'm guessing you'll want the SP101

GP 100 is bigger and heavier, but it is concealable. I use it for CCW and it does not print with the right holster and clothing. SP 101 is smaller, lighter and easier to conceal, but will be a little harder to shoot with .357 magnum. Not too bad but not as controllable as the GP 100 with magnum loads. All this having been said, you need to hold them both and see which gun feels the best for you. The best CCW gun is the one you will actually carry.

3.06" SP-101 .357 weighs 27.0 oz, 5 shooter
3.00" GP-100 .357 weighs 36.0 oz, 6 shooter

There is a big difference in the feel of the two guns. I have both and the full sized GP-100 is a pleasure to shoot. There is probably not a better more reliable moderately priced full sized .357 6-shot revolver on the market. Comes in several barrel lengths, blue or stainless.

The SP-101 is a smaller 5-shooter, stainless only with two barrel lengths, still just as rugged and reliable just in a smaller package. You know when you shoot .357s in an SP. 8) 8)

My wife has tiny hands. She can handle the SP101 easily. The GP 100 is a challenge because the gip is too big. She has learned to shoot full-house .357mag loads with the little gun (3"barrel), but finds them hard to control. It's her gun now. I figure I'll need to buy another for myself.

For purse cary, the SP101 is no problem. In her small frame, a belt holster shows.

Couple of the gang at camp have SP101's. They love them. Field carry, fishin' gun use. If I hadn't fallen into a .44spec Bulldog yrs ago, and prefer and load for that caliber, I'd own a SP101. Nice piece. steve b

I have a couple more local gun shops to check to see if they have both in stock so I can hold them and see if one feels better than the other, other wise I will wait toll the end of the month for the gun show across the water in hampton and go look at them then. i am not even sure if .357 will be my next caliber purchase. Just doing some looking and asking around right now. Might go .45 or 9mm. Thanks for everyones help.

I have and shoot both. Buy the SP NOW and be happy. But keep your eye out for a nice GP to come along and get it too!
