What is it for?

I noticed that Ruger 22 pistols have a little stickie dot, sometimes colored, on the grip frame by the pin that is above the trigger guard. I have an early 22/44 which I have shot the hell out of and just noticed that it has a black one that is still there. I have had this probably 15 years.

Is this some kind of quality control / inspection indicator? If not, what in the hell is it for?

I do believe it is an inspectors "dot."

I've also heard it's an inspectors "dot." The color indicates who the inspector was.

I've seen these many times myself & always "ASSUME"ed they were inspection stickers too..
