Grips or violin.

I've already built 2 violin backs from this tree so Grips it is!

There we go! Made an aluminum template since I will make more of these. Fit to the gun is very good so now to contour it similar to factory style as that is what I like. Chief aka Maxx Load

Nice job but lots simpler to make a template from Lexan. It's also much easier to shape down the contour roughly before fitting to the edge.

Then you're only working with maybe and eighth inch verses trying to fit a half inch or so to the frame.

But like I've said before what ever works for you is the way to do it. Show us pic of the finished job please.

Not the final finish, still need to finish sanding so just a thin coat of lacquer that will get sanded off. Too many distractions today so only got one side.
I have the aluminum to make templates and I can fasten the blank right to the template to rough it out...gives me something to hold onto. Hopefully I can get to the other side tomorrow. I only have a black screw so that is the way it will be. When I get the other side done than I can do the final fitting and finishing. Chief aka Maxx Load

Nice grips and I love the cutting board too.
Thanks, been threatening to get rid of the scrap hardwood so I made up several cutting boards like that to help the cause(yard sale stuff). Having fun with the grips right now but should have some more work in soon so need to giterdone. That wood came from a tree that fell on my neighbors house 25 years ago so I cut it up and was able to make many fine pieces of furniture from it, of which I kept one end table. The final pic of this project will be taken on that tabletop. Chief aka Maxx Load

There it is folks, as you can see I love the "fiddleback" grain. The fit and finish on these grips is exceedingly nicer than my crummy pic shows. You can also get the idea how easy it is to make grips with just a little patience and a few tools. I think next time I will make the template at a half inch thickness to replicate the gripframe and attach both slabs for rough-in and shaping. The tabletop is over 20 years old and the finish has yellowed to a nice patina. The bowl is just a nice piece of Walnut that I turned way back when I had more inspiration to do this stuff. I think I am getting the bug to do more of this arty kinda stuff again. Thanks

I kept expecting pics of a violin back.....

reuben...
Fiddles are long gone, actually I just made some parts for a group of wannabe musical instrument makers. The violins turned out well tho it did take them 18 months to do the assembly. Chief aka Maxx Load
