What CAN'T be replaced (aftermarket) on a 10/22?

I am slowly becoming aware of the various upgrades available from aftermarket retailers for the 10/22. When I saw the X-Ring Custom .22LR receiver available from Tactical Solutions, I thought, can a Ruger be completely built from aftermarket parts?

At the extreme end of modifying, what keeps the gun a Ruger?

Pretty much everything can be changed out. Volquartsen and Kidd make receivers as well. I have one 10/22 where the receiver is the only factory part left on it.
A new receiver with the serial number is still required to go through an FFL though. Everything else can be mailed directly to you and changed out.

With the availability of aftermarket receivers, the 10/22 has now reached the same status as the 1911 and AR-15--you can build up an entire gun from scratch without one single new "factory original" part on it. :shock:

yep, you'll end up with a 10/22 but it won't be a Ruger, then you cannot call it a "10/22" cause I think they have that 'copy righted'.....hhhmmmm :roll:

Some of the builds are really interesting, however only the factory original RSI versions catch my eye.

Yes, you can build a 10/22 with zero Ruger parts. Here is one I built with the bolt being the only Ruger part, which had been accurized by RimfireTech. There are also aftermarket bolts from KIDD and Tactical Innovations. Receiver from Nodak/Spud.

I don't suppose any of the aftermarket receivers are left-handed, are they?

One company did make a left hand one but it was in the $700 range if I recall correctly. Don't know if they even are in business now.

You'd need a left-handed bolt too, of course, and left-handed magazines, since the 10/22's primary ejector is on the left lip of the magazine.
