Snow that is. Not sure when it started but looks like 3-4" at 5AM and still coming down. Sort of wishing I'd left my rifle and pack in the deer house last night.
This is bound to change deer movement. One of the offshoots of having 200-300 acres of rye 'cover crop' is the deer have green, tasty forage over a wide area and don't have to move during daylight hours to feed. Suddenly, their grocery cart is covered by snow.

It snowed heavily most of the day but slacked off in the evening. I sat in a different deer house for the evening and ended up shooting a 15" spread 8 point and a big doe. I can't remember seeing a deer leave such a large blood trail for so far. The buck was 200+ yards out crossing a soybean field. He wasn't inclined to stop and I failed to lead quite enough. The 129 grain Hornady soft point hit the back of the onside lung and puree'd the liver on the off side. Somehow managed to not rupture the paunch. I heard the hit (one of the perks of using a suppressor) but the buck ran over 100 yards leaving a 4' wide blood spray in the snow. Really. Four feet of spray on the far side. Totally amazed that he made it so far shedding that much blood.
The doe was hit just below her chin as she faced me @ 150 yards. PFFTTT, thump, done.
Both had great lumps of fat inside their body cavity--obviously well fed on soybeans.
I still have several tags left but we have a 5 day break before the antlerless season begins 12/6. I plan to downsize to the 6.5 Grendel for that--lighter, shorter, and easier to handle in the deer blinds. That season runs 9 days and another 12 day break before the 'Alternative Methods' season. The weather can be pretty challenging by that time.
