This is science fiction stuff.... watching the Telsa sports car with the dummy spaceman making oribs around the earth on it's way to Mars. Watching it on my big screen TV on Youtube live feed....just awesome!!!! Check it out if you can!

I saw a video, not live though. It is amazing. I told a guy I know the Tesla Roadster onboard is pretty funny. He disagreed for reasons I disagree with. But whatever, it is funny, and great advertising. So yes, it is pure science fiction brought to life. Also Amazing a private company could do something our gov't could not.

The plan I read is this was first test of this large rocket which may be used to get man to Mars in years to come. You can find the live feed of the Rocket Man as it is leaving Earth orbit.

I think it is just fantastic that this guy and his company Space X can pull it off so smoothly!!

So, this is simply advertising or what...?

Sure, it's the most expensive advertising in the world. It's also a test of the largest rocket ever launched and a test of how heavy a payload it's capable of delivering.

The most amazing part is the rockets landing on their tails. Just like all the rocket ships I read about as a kid. To bad Heinlein didn't live long enough to see it. Most amazing besides the safe landing was how they did in in near unison. Beautiful! Sure beats tossing them in the sea. It will be very interesting to see how long it takes to refurbish them for additional flights.
It's also an amazing accomplishment for a man whose Tesla cars have yet to make a dime of profit.

Supposedly in the Tesla, they have the song "Space Oddity" by David Bowie) playing in an endless loop.

That oughta scare aliens away from messing with it.

edited to change the song to match the artist. It was not Rocket Man which was by Elton John, but it was Space Oddity by David Bowie...my error

I watched the launch from my brother's driveway. St.Cloud is quite a ways from Kennedy Space center, but still saw the bright rocket exhaust and vapor trail. We went back in the house to see the balance of the launch and rocket recovery. Very interesting......

Dave

I saw the recovery of 2 of the rockets, but what about the 3rd one? It was supposed to land on a drone ship out in the ocean. Did it land, or was it lost. 8)

Elon Musk is a genius, he gets to play with rockets, build cars that no one wants. and hang out with supermodels...all on the taxpayers dime. Genius!

Well, SpaceX is actually putting thing in orbit these days. NASA, not so much.
SpaceX did actually figure out a way to land a rocket and reuse it. NASA, not so much.
SpaceX actually landed a number of rockets on barges. Yea, only two of the three made it. NASA, well they've never landed one on anything.

Tesla may make cars you think no one wants, but why is it they sell all they make and have orders for years in the future.

Sounds like complaining about Elon Musk is just sour grapes.

I know it isn't a car thread, but I have seen one of the Tesla Roadsters once in a parking garage. What a beautiful car. Not very big either. Almost every day around DFW I see two or three Tesla cars while driving. They are very very nice looking cars.

I was praising him, he's a genius.

I loved the Corvette scene in the Heavy Metal movie, My hat is off to Elon Musk, that spaceman cruising the roadster to Mars was the freakin coolest thing I have seen and landing the two boosters at the same time, that was fun science.
I love what Burt Ruttan got going and seeing that mankind can in a time as ugly as Islamic terrorism and drone weapons that we can do something besides kill people with our technology and dreams.

Best place to watch a launch from Kennedy Space Center is to take toll road 528 as close to Cocoa each as you can get, pull over to the side and wait & watch. Once watched a space shuttle takeoff from there.

The two main booster rockets did land beautifully and at the same time. Unfortunately, the third section did not. It had four retro motors to slow it and guide it to land on the barge. Two of those retros fired ok, but for some reason the other two failed to ignite.

This caused the thing to come down too fast, something like 320 miles per hour and a little off course. Hitting the water that fast caused it to blow up. I'm sure they'll get it perfected yet with no government to interfere with them.

"Rocket Man" was an Elton John song. The Bowie song is "Space Oddity."
