Space, The Final Frontier

I agree with Neil deGrasse Tyson on this, instead of using our tech & resources on other planets for any reason, we should use it to fix Earth first.

The bottoms of the oceans are just a mysterious as space. They are finding new critters all the time.

Not sure all the money in the world could "fix" Earth....the way that "they" think it needs fixing.

I would agree, but I think establishing bases on the moon- which was just announced as the new main Artemis mission- hopefully by 2028- would probably be easier to do than on the ocean bottom, and with less maintenance. I agree the we should see what our own planet has to offer, but there is a reason that the ocean bottoms remain mostly unexplored. Much tougher environment than even the moon.

BTW- As this new mission was described, I am not sure that mining is the main reason for it. I think the materials mined will be used there, not here. Materials and energy to keep the bases ( Yes, plural- just as they described it on the news). going and growing. Originally there was only going to be a space station orbiting the moon. Maybe "Possession is 9/10ths of the law" even there?

I didn't know the Earth was "broken". Seems every time some group finds the next big thing that will destroy it, the Earth just shrugs it off. Remember the ozone layer going away, oops it's still here. Remember global warming, well actually it not so we'll just call it global change. Guess what, it's been a whole lot hotter and a whole lot cooler on this rock at one time or another, and it's still here and life still abounds.

Baby steps, First we screw up Earth, then we screw up the Moon which makes earth habitual, we need to move on to Mars so that we can keep moving off everything we screw up. We have to get far enough away from our sun so that we are not in striking range when it explodes.

Did you ever notice that all of the Borg were just augmented humans? Yep, become like locusts, devour and move on. The universe is infinite so...

This big rock has been changing since it first formed. Very very hot, very very cold and everywhere in between. A trip to the moon to see if we can actually live and acquire anything that would help on Earth is a good thing. Finding new places and things, much as the Vikings, Columbus, Cook, and many others did. That is why we 'question' what is where and how it may benifit us.

I wouldn't worry about it.... you gotta transport or find a way to manufacture air..... anybody gonna trust that to the lowest bidder??

We can actually make it just like we can make anything.... they can actually extract hydrogen from water (H20) but it takes more energy to do it than they get from it. One day we'll figure out the secret.

It's not the earth we need to worry about... she just laughs at us and all we are doing to her.... I still say a hundred million years from now, which by the way is not very long when looking at the age of this planet, the aliens will arrive and one of the first things they will do is drill a core hole down a couple hundred feet to look at the history of the planet... 50 or 60ft down will be a 1/4" layer of what we humans did while we were here... the really interesting part is the aliens will not be surprised.... just part of the normal evolution of planets like this... a semi-intelegent carbon based life form advanced to the stage that they finally destroyed themselves. Just keep in mind the dinosaurs were here 6 times longer than we have been on the planet. If it's not a big rock it will be one hell of a nuclear firestorm.....

WE cannot 'FIX' Earth. The biggest issues with this planet are NOT caused by USA but by 'turd world' areas that only see the immediate profit from some resource. Africa, Eastern Europe, and South America deplete/consume/destroy far more for personal interest of dictators and political thieves. :poop:

Growing up in the 1950s we were told the moon was made of green cheese. In 1969 and 1972 the various astronauts verified that it wasn't. There was no reason to go back.

The Gods of the Copybook Headings (Kipling)

"As I pass through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew,
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four–
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!"

I think liberals would love to colonize the moon and get relief for their Trump TDS, Derangement Syndrome

I think that movie has already been made. I don't remember the title but it didn't do well.
