WARNING from Blume357 (Update 6/23)

You don’t get high if you have pain. People get into trouble when they take it after the pain is gone.

Don’t drink alcohol while on pain meds! You will get super loopy.

I'm going to try and hold off on the bourbon until at least tomorrow night.... but damn....
On top of that I've got a whole box of cigars sitting here beside me....
I'm trying to be good....
In the mean time here is the x-ray of my ankle after they were done... I need to talk to my doctor neighbor and figure out the black stripe...

that top 'screw' looks actually like a bolt that goes all the way through...

Heal fast, Blume! I once had a ruptured tendon reattached after almost a month, and I have never experienced such pain! They were rotating between morphine, oxy, and acetaminophen every 2 hours, for over 12 hours before they got the post-op pain under control. I hope to bever experience anything even remotely close again! I finally maxed out on morphine, and the nurse told me that any more morphine would likely stop my heart.

The top screw goes all the way through to stabilize the joint. I go tomorrow to see the orthopedic doctor and see what he says. Last time I danced to Leo Sayer and Long Tall Glasses. Tomorrow I'm going to dance to Cab Calloway and Minnie the Moocher! I had the whole place laughing last time

Is that one of those pieces of hardware they remove after things are healed? My cousin just had one removed from her wrist. So you have to recover from two surgeries. It takes longer, but the end results are much better. Se's heavy in to CAP so I asked her if she would be able to fly when it's all healed. Her response was that she couldn't before, but after the drugs she was convince it might be possible.

Apparently I am doing something wrong.
I have been prescribed Percocet lots of times , and have never had the reactions you guys apparently get.
Besides helping the pain , all it ever did was make me tired.
Same here. Aspirin actually works better, and never get loopy from it. Tramadol works nicely though, without messing with my head.

forgive me if I'm repeating... just before noon yesterday... little over 24 hours after surgery the nerve block started to wear off. I could start to just barely wiggle my toes.... which are exposed out of the big bandage... man those toes are ugly... I won't post a picture... then an hour later the block was gone and I was in some pretty bad pain.... but not moving my foot at all kind of kept it down a bit... finally moved from the chair with foot on a stool to the hospital bed we have out here on the porch and lay there with leg above my heart and an ice pack under my knee and that helped ... then I finally got up and scooted around inside for about 10 minutes and man my foot was hurting bad.... did not get better no matter what I tried or how I lay on the hospital bed with ice. finally just went to my real bed on the other side of the house ... the sleeping porch... I had forgotten to turn the fans on ahead of time and it was pretty hot and miserable and I just lay on top of the covers and finally went down.... but here is the good news... took Tylenol at 2:00 and then a refill of the oxycodone at 4:00 (doing it every 6 hours) and got up at 6:00 and actually feel pretty good ... very little pain... back out on the porch looking forward to the day.... and posting stupid stuff here.

Oh and I've decided to do the Tylenol 2 hours before the next Oxy pill... seems all these heavy pain killers stop working about 1-2 hours before the next recommended dose....

I told you once the initial procedure meds wore off it would get you a bit. I always start taking the meds as soon as possible to avoid that. I usually stick to the prescribed schedule also....typically a heavy C2 narcotic with a lighter dose in between.

You mentioned Tramadol.....I have it but it doesn't do anything for me. It's a synthetic narcotic. Also, if you have any kidney or liver issues stay away from stuff with Acetaminophen. Works great but tears up your organs.

Best of luck with your recovery. I had a crushed right ankle and multiple fractures of my tibia due to a head-on collision so I know how you feel at this stage. My best advice is to stay on top of your pain and take the medication as prescribed. Don’t let the pain get ahead of you. It can take hours to get comfortable again.

Yes stay ahead of the pain if possible. I'm on a course of prednisone until this coming Tuesday because I have surgery on Wednesday on my lung. My ankle is healing well but I have 2 more weeks in the Oregon Boot then I can use a brace in my shoe.
I danced for the doctor this morning to Minnie the Moocher by Cab Calloway. I had him laughing.

Good luck with that lung thing for sure...
glad you can dance I can't even think about standing up on this thing....

I finally figure out the black strips in the xray... user this big bandage is a splint... the doc in the pre-op meeting last week actually said I would come home with a splint on my leg... now that I look closer at the bandage I can kind of see the outline of the rods.... I think I can kind of feel them too.

For my cancer surgery next week I am going to tell them that they are working on my lung not my schwanstuker and that doesn't need any extra piping added. If I wake up with something hanging out of my crank the entire hospital will know my displeasure in no uncertain terms.
I'm usually a pretty cooperative patient but there are lines that I will not let them cross.
During a colonoscopy in 2015 I was surprised when they told me that my wife had scheduled me for an endoscopy at the same time and I found it out at the check-in window. I went off and made them redo the paperwork. Then the idiot trying to put in the IV poked me 6 times and I sandblasted him but good. He took off his gloves and threw them at me then they made the mistake of sending in a priest to see me... I asked him if he didn't have an altarboy that he needed to play with (he got caught later doing that)!!

After the procedure I informed my wife (retired ICU RN) that I am her husband and not her patient and she should have said something to me about an endoscopy instead of them springing it on me.
Yep, I get it.

I can take a lot of meds to put me under, and even then, the best they will get is compliance. I don't dig being roofied.
I don't let them use opiates on me, 1) because I'm allergic 2) I like it too much, and it takes A LOT, but see number 1. It doesn't end well for me.
I can take a lot of pain while I'm awake, but my moaning in my sleep doesn't sit well with the wife.
Coming out of anesthesia....Katy bar the door, I'm out for blood, so there has to be something beside narcotics that can be used.
OOPS

But that's the point.....:giggle:

Works for me

I had an infected gall bladder that needed to come out---was in very much pain---they gave me morphine for the pain... Well, that chit really got me going---hallucinations and everything---I was seeing things like dogs chasing cats thru the hospital---waking-up in a cave with dirt walls and ceiling---going shopping in the middle of the night at Walmart (no Walmarts anywhere near the hospital, and besides, I don't shop at Walmart anyway!)---and much more... A doctor came by and asked how I was doing, and I told him about the various things I was seeing, and he told me maybe we better reduce my meds...! I said yeah, it was all too much...

Careful with the pain killers. You may start chanting "I love the orange man, I love the orange man"
Worst case scenario you could become a conservative.
Wow! You don't want the poor man to have nightmares! Blume is a great guy and hopefully at some point I will meet him at contender's annual shoot.
The place that I retired from and currently back working for when my ankle problem occurred has a huge smokestack.

It's 165' tall and red brick. My boss asked me if I had any ideas on how to make it look better.
I said put a head on top and paint it pink with veins!!
He didn't take me up on my suggestion

We've got one locally that was for a trash incinerator. Yep, the city used to collect the trash and them burn it in huge incinerators. The stack became a land mark. It's not a historical thing and can't be torn down. The old incinerators have been removed, and the large building is now a service area for trash trucks. They painted the name of the town on it. You can see it for miles.

Yesterday was a good day.... so far this morning not bad... no pain as long as it don't move it... but if I twist it wrong.. oh boy!
I did stop doing the Tylenol between the 6 hour Oxy's yesterday....
Interesting little side note... so I'm fixing my breakfast yesterday morning after feeding the dogs... this is really work having to do all this while on a knee scooter, and I go to heat the left over oat meal from the day before in the microwave... one minute button does not work... hit it about 6 or 8 times.... no go... must be worn out.. so I punch in 3 minutes and hit start and the damn thing still won't come on... I'm squinting trying to look at the small print under the display to see if my wife programed it somehow for something... and finally.... realize... I have not closed the door..... I think it's good I'm not allowed out in the world right now....

btw, get a bedside urine bottle. itll save you heartache in the middle of the night.

When I had my neck surgery several years ago I was on a serious narcotics schedule.....they gave me the pee jug......that thing still comes in handy. It was great on surveillances.....

I hope they give me one after my surgery on Wednesday. If I wake up with extra piping attached I will be whizzed whizzing Watertender...

It's just a matter of pride for some folks. I spent almost a month bed bound peeing through a tube and defecating in a tub. Needing someone to wipe your but as an adult brings a lot into perspective.

If not, when they allow you to order a meal ask for 3 cups of coffee....they will most likely bring you a small coffee pots.....hide behind your pillow ;)
