Baltimore has always been a bad city, but because of it's small size never really made the national news like Chicago. Went to baseball games over 50 years ago at Memorial stadium it was a scary place then.

I thought Detroit was the worst, Seems there was a report recently on the worst cities for crime and it was at the top.
I wouldn't live in or near any of them. Including New Orleans.

Not too long after the shooting in the OP there was another a short time later when two groups met, pulled guns, and did battle. As I said, Baltimore is a war zone!

In the 1980s I was in the Navy and my ship went in for a short overhaul in Baltimore. We were advised then to avoid the downtown areas. I guess it hasn't gotten any better. I'll bet it is all drug or gang related, but the guns will get the blame.

In the 80s the "bad spot" was the "Block". All the strip clubs and such are there. Today the entire city is a 'war zone'. The other night, downtown at the Hippodrome theater (which the wife and I have been to many times for live performances), there was a shooting in front of it while a show was being performed inside.

Other way around , Chicago has a long way to go to catch up to Baltimore .

If you went to the statistical efforts to break down to smaller geographic units , like maybe zip codes , parts of West Baltimore and parts of South Chicago are probably very similar . But Chicago has large areas with large population with relatively modest crime rates , and Baltimore doesn't .

My eldest daughter has a home about a mile from one of the most dangerous areas in the southwest of Baltimore, Cherry Hill. Fortunately she works the other way and doesn't have to even travel near it. West Patapsco Ave is the FEBA (Forward Edge of the Battle Area).
