Yes, blue worn off is a sign of abuse unless it's 100 years old. People own guns for different reasons therefore their opinions on what a good deal is or what is appealing also differs.

So holster wear is abuse now??? Very interesting. I'm trying to figure out how someone "abusively" holsters and unholsters a handgun. I have guns with bluing wear that is from handling. I guess I was "abusing" my guns by handling and shooting them.

Blue wear from use and holsters is normal and actually attractive to me.

Yes. Stainless or Parkerized or composite is a better choice unless 100% preference. I personally would never carry something blue in a holster if it could be defaced/devalued. How many Old Model Blackhawks and Single Sixes have you seen with a turn line? That's abuse because it's preventable behavior that causes damage. Why would someone choose to continue behavior that causes damage? There are several reasons (maybe they're not fans of semi-autos or composite, maybe that person does not like stainless, maybe blued is their favorite and they don't care about the damage) just like there's several reasons why I would not. Mostly because it's unnecessary. The topic is 10/22's that are over 40 years old and my comments are all geared the same. I am not referring to holster wear on a three year old gun because that kind of damage is meaningless.

My walnut stocked 10/22 was $54.86 using my wife's Woolworth's discount, it was a bicentennial one in 1976. Since my wife was an employee the counter guy let me go in the back and take my pick from stock. I picked one with great fiddleback grain but it had a plastic buttplate, Out came a screwdriver and we switched plates with one that was metal. Nice accurate rifle but it got traded away down the road.

I am a sucker for a nice piece of walnut. Factory is nice but I do step out of my purist ideology when it comes to the 10/22. It's like the square body Chevy pickups, there are a million ways to customize them, and I have yet to find one I like better than the rest. This custom stock was on a "stainless" receiver and a stainless 17 Mach2 for quite a while. Those components went down the road, but I held onto the stock. Someday I'll build another but for now the stock sits in a protective sock leaned up against the bookshelf in my home office.

Wear just translates to LOVE for a 10/22. They made millions so the others I own that I shot will show wear which I personally prefer. There was a gentleman years ago on the Rimfire forum that offered an awesome customization of the metal trigger groups and I sent him a couple. The plastic groups get swapped out for the metal customized when I own it and then swapped back into plastic when I sell it. I don't have anything against plastic other than I'm turning into my grandfather and father and mentally equate plastic into cost savings and a lack of trying by the manufacturer. Probably not true anymore but I argue with myself on enough other items I don't want to add any more.
