Walmart gets into the act

Wonder IF all that wonderful mileage on the Tesla included using AC in the south and hotter areas of the country, Night time driving and/or heating in the winter time.
 
So at one of those links above I read that the batteries have about 8 years life expectancy.

It also said that replacing them would be about the cost of a new gas engine small car. I have cars now that have a lot more than eight years on them and are still going strong.

This degradation of the battery pack ( and therefore range and recharge effectiveness) has a significant effect on trade-in/resale value also, as has been noted in the last 3 or 4 years. Many of the EV's trade in/resale value after 36,000 miles +/- is only 20% or so of the new price. Tesla is somewhat of an exception regarding trade-in value, due primarily to it's "luxury car" status. But is still taking a serious hit. Something to consider if buying. If somebody just has to have a EV they are better off leasing instead of buying.

I didn't think about heating. Since you wouldn't have the engine to produce the heat, the batteries would have to supply it. Electric heaters really suck up the juice.
 
I'd suspect that big electric motor generates a bit of heat that could be extracted.... as for the battery depreciating ... I thought I read somewhere that they had sort of fixed this.... AC is a different matter....

I know I was watching an episode of the British Top Gear and they tested the BMW hybrid and noted the engineers at BMW said it would get the equivalent of 132mpg... they got something like 39..... the BMW folks probably tested it on a 69 degree day going down a mountain road..... they had probably just been hired away from VW.

In the long run if a good percentage of vehicles go electric or hybrid/electric it will be a big plus for the country. It will conserve natural recourses and it is better for the environment. Why do you think there are so many electric and hybrid busses and commercial vehicles. Granted they are not for everybody.

That's the assumption. But, as already pointed out, where do the materials for the batteries come from, and where/how are they manufactured? And, most of the electricity in this country is generated by coal, petroleum or gas-fired plants -- each of which has its own problematic set of environmental complications.

That's an easy one to answer -- government subsidies.

Agreed. It has to come from somewhere.. I liken this stuff, to the florescent light bulbs that came out and claimed to be saving the environment.. Yeah right.. You ever look at the package? Those bulbs have Mercury in them.. They claim if you ever drop one, it's a hazmat issue.. And then, we dump them in the environment when they are burned out..

So much for saving the environment..

I would rather go with the better LED versions.. I have a few of them, and they work great actually..

It's all a con game to make money.. That's all it's about in this country.. Making money..
 
Lithium comes from some big dry inland sea bed down in Peru or close to there... saw it on one of those travel programs a few weeks ago.... So, the question of: "where does the products for the batteries come from?" where everything else we have comes or came from... the ground.

edit: actually I think it was Bolivia... the place where Butch and Sundance ended up.

Why am I not surprised by this article? Every time these people propose a solution to a problem, the cure is worse than the disease..

As for me, I'll stick with my gasoline powered V8.. I need pulling power. You just can't get that out of an electric vehicle anyway..
