I inherited a .38 special from my father. He was a retired NYC detective.
I suspect he purchased the gun in the 1960's. I want to register it voluntarily. I have filled out the form already.
My question is this: If I register this gun, does that count towards a handgun purchase per month?

Im in NJ.

Thank you

Can't answer about the law, but wonder why you don't purchase your "One per Month" and then register the .38 the following month. As crazy as the current market is, you may not be able to make your purchase in a month.

Welcome to the Forum!
First,, I have no clue about the laws there, so I can not answer your questions. However,, to avoid legal issues,, I'd politely ask an attorney, or an IMPARTIAL legal person. (Sometimes a cop just doesn't know the exact legal definition.)
And while here in the south, we do not have any registration,,, I would not risk a felony conviction by following any advise to ignore the law.

From a POV of a person living in a country with mandatory registration of handguns, I cannot fathom how anyone in their right mind might want a voluntary registration.

^^This^^

Not that Arizona has any form of gun registration...

it will be just one more for them to check off the list on the day all guns are to be delivered to your local PO. Personally i would place a huge premium on an "off paper" gun of any kind. even if that means never being able to shoot it in public for fear of running across a goon asking for my papers. just my opinion.

OP- DO NOT ask anyone about registering the gun other than an attorney who is working on your behalf. Especially do not talk to a cop or anyone else in LE/ government. Their job is not to help you out or clarify a legal question, it's to put people in jail. Asking a question about an unregistered handgun is the same as saying "I would really enjoy a long stay at the graybar hotel."

Contact the NRA and they can help you locate an attorney that knows NJ gun laws. Not every attorney can give you the right answer. Best of luck.

I bit off track but does NJ have a 'collector' waiver? Here in Maryland, whose laws are as bad or worse than NJ, we have a 'collector' dispensation. Once you apply to the State police for a collectors waiver and are cleared you can legally purchase as many guns per month as you wish. The waiting period remains in effect for each purchase but it helps if you want to get two or more. Might be worth checking on.

You don't say what state you are in, but here in Calif, I purchased two guns. One was a new Blackhawk 357/9mm and the other was an old model convertable Single Six.

I was able to purchase them together because the dealer ran the Single Six as a consignment gun. It seems that the "one gun a month" only pertains to "New" guns.
