Voles not moles

We live in a newer development. The property to our back is not developed yet and likely won't have a house behind me for another year or two. We've been here for three years now, and the property behind us was kind of a meadow separated from a farm field by a small drainageway.

We (and neighbors on each side) have a real problem with voles. The first couple of years I was poisoning them when I could find their vole hole. :mrgreen: My neighbor on one side has a young springer spaniel now that likes to think my lawn is an extension of theirs, so I am loath to put any kind of poison out there any more. In one of the few periods this winter when the lawn wasn't covered with snow, I could see the crisscrossed trails all over. My wife has seen a couple of the little critters poking their heads up thru the snow.

Anyone have experience with these critters? How can I get rid of them and keep them gone? Ideas? There is a wealth of wisdom on this board, so I thought I'd ask.

Treat your lawn for bugs and grubs. Take away the food and they will move on. I mow a little over 4 acres of yard, about an acre and half I maintain as lawn, weed and feed insect control, no voles in that part. The rest of the yard just gets mowed. I can see their tunnels and occasionally see them in that part

They use the tunnels the moles use to travel. I find where they have come out of the tunnels (look for small openings in the tunnel) and set a mouse trap next to the hole using peanut butter as bait. Cover the trap and hole with a shoe box or any box to keep out the light. It works great for me and I've caught a bunch of them. BTW, you will find out there are more of them around than you think.
