A pileated woodpecker. Common here in middle Tn. Their voice is loud and raucous. They alert the forest to intruders. Many a time they have told me a deer was incoming

As a 13-year-old suburban kid taking a walk through the woods, I was startled by a loud, shrieking call. Scared the bejejus out of me, till I caught a glimpse of the bird flying off. A truly spectacular bird.

We had an entire family on the property this last year. The youngsters were especially entertaining!

Always one or more around here. Once 3 at one time, so figure they nested nearby. Lots of the little Downeys too.

I love it out here in the desert southwest, but I DO miss wildlife like this!
