I'm going to be there next weekend to run the Marine Corp Marathon and will have a few
extra days for myself and wife to wander around. Already have a tour of the capital set, planning
on Arlington and some of the Smithsonian museums.
Anybody have any suggestions of things that are sorta "under the radar" of places
to see or things to do that you found interesting?
We won't have a car, so it's the Metro, feet, or Uber for transportation.
We're staying in a hotel about a mile north of Arlington Cemetery.
Thanks
Dave

I’m noy sure if the NRA museum is within Metro range of D.C. Maybe a combo of Metro and Uber. Worth seeing in my opinion.

Figure the better part of one day at the Smithsonian if you really want to see everything. You will be on the Mall anyway so take a trip to the top of the Washington Monument. The Natural History museum is across the Mall from the Smithsonian and if you are into 'old bones' that is also a good stop. There are also tours of the Capitol that are interesting.

Dave,
We always made it a point to visit the Aerospace Museum. Oh, and the National Zoo.
Don't forget, Foggy Bottom is a gun free zone. :<(
Blackie

Pretty much everywhere we're going is a gun free zone.
Even the marathon expo has security checkpoints.
Hadn't thought about the zoo, my wife might like it.....maybe
I could donate her!
Thanks
Dave

If you want to do the Washington monument you may already be too late. You need to make reservations and last I heard they were a week out. :(

Forget the Monument. They are closed till Spring of 2019. From their site: "The Monument is closed for elevator modernization and for the construction of a new security screening facility. The closure will run until Spring 2019. The Washington Monument grounds remain open."

Thanks for the ideas.
The NRA museum might be possible, it's not too far from a Metro station.
The Treasury or mint might be kind of interesting also. We've got half a day Friday all of
Monday and most of Tuesday to wander about, the Saturday before a race I usually just like
to lay around.
The marathon course goes by several of the monuments and along the mall, so I'll get to see a few
things on the way by.

A number of the Smithsonian museums are around mall (with a metro stop there).

The Spy Museum was recently updated, not far from the the Old Ebbitt Grill, cool place for dining. Just up the street from the White House. You can take Segway tours around town, cover a lot of places.

Just forget Washington Monument . White House requires about a 2 month advance request with your congress critter. Was told by my hotel desk the Metro doesn't get that far into Va.

Is the Old Ebbitt a casual jeans and shirt place?
I'm packing light...but by Sunday night I could
eat a bear as long as there was plenty of beer to
wash it down.
Thanks
Dave
