Very Early 10/22

I found a very early 10/22 at a gun show this weekend and bought it because it's neat. When I was looking it over, I saw that the serial number is in the mid-200s.

After reviewing some threads here, I have found one that sold on GB for something like $1,800. Is this a real number, or is this pie-in-the-sky money for this gun?

I plan on keeping it, but I was just wondering if I have something THAT special.

Welcome to the forum.

Not an impossible price. Depends on condition, originality, if the box is still with it, etc.

Fewer than 1000 were made with a three digit serial number.
Even fewer yet with two digits and less yet with single digit. The closer you get to number 1, the higher the price.

We need detailed pics please.

I had my early 10/22 out last night. Not super-early, but does still have a walnut stock and metal buttplate. It's a standard carbine. I dont think the filler screws have ever even been taken out of it. I had it out thinking about putting a scope on it, but a little reluctant to even do that.

I wouldn't. Shoot it some, yes, but no scopes or anything else like that.

You did very well. I feel like 3 digit 10/22's value are in the 2k +/- range. The magazine should be a slotted mag. I have 97,250, 262, and 503. I owned 281 at one time. 503 will go on gunbroker sometime in the near future.

Mid 200s serial number like 200–299 on a Ruger 10/22 puts it solidly in the very first production year 1964 Ruger's official chart starts at 1 for '64, jumps to 453 for '65, so anything under 453 is '64 first year.

That's pretty special for collectors one of the earliest 10/22s made instant hit, but only a few hundred shipped that year before ramping up. Condition is everything original parts, no heavy mods, good wood metal finish, no rust pitting.


Low triple digit or very low four-digit '64s in excellent shape have sold on GunBroker for $800–$1,500 in the past some with factory letters push higher.

But $1,800 sounds like pie in the sky or auction fever that's more for pristine, documented ultra low under 100 or special variants e.g., early Deluxe with checkered walnut. Standard early carbines usually land $400–$900 depending on condition and buyer enthusiasm.

Recent average used 10/22s even older ones go $250–$400 first year premiums exist but not always massive unless mint.

Really there was 15000 or so the first year. 453 was just the first gun shipped in 65

FYI, I put it on my table in Tulsa and got an offer I couldn't refuse. I got $1,800 for it.

I also found a 1970 NIB recently, so I guess I will keep that one.
