Vegas to Reno Advice

Mostly 2 lane roads with little traffic. We drove up to Beatty, over to Lone Pine thru Death Valley & up to Reno in two days. Lots to see if you like the desert, but be prepared with plenty of gas, water & some food.
Slow down when you get into Reno. If a fairly young fireplug of a motorcycle cop gets you, just tell him dad says hi :mrgreen: He really, really loves his job. :wink:
I've driven north from Vegas but up to Jackpot and home to Boise. It's a lonely road across Nevada, lonely but beautiful. The high country desert... Watch out for UFO's.
I've traveled 95 from the junction of 160 to Tonopah. By West Virginia standards the road is great.

DO they have speed limits in Nevada now OR is it still, "As Conditions Permit" ?

They do have speed limits in Nevada. I drove through there headed north through Elko, Ely, Wells, and Jackpot but I was headed to Boise as well. I can tell you there is not a lot of traffic, and it's a boring trip IMHO, YMMV.
If I remember correctly the speed limit was between 65 and 70 depending on where you are. Hard to remember I was in 5 states on that trip.

That road is so lonely you'll think you are in Montana. I'd be tempted to go through Death Valley then up 395 just for the better scenery and services. .gov forced the states to impose the 55 limit. I loved that NV thumbed their noses at the National 55 MPH Speed Limit by making tickets between 55 and 75 a $5 enviromental violation. They have since eliminated that and I think some areas are posted at 75mph.

The main thing is to slow down to the speed limit going through the towns. I have trucked back and forth from Las Vegas Up through Reno on my way up to Oregon and Washingon and back since 1970.

I have never traveled to Reno, will have a trip next year. I will need to get fuel at least once. What spot would be about half way that you can get fuel ?

I rode that route on my Goldwing a few years ago. Road is in good shape, made good time.

There are a few small (really small) towns where the speed limit drops from highway speed down to 25mph. It is real easy to get a speeding ticket there.

Go to Nevada DOT for road construction information. It has been said that we here in Nevada enjoy but two seasons: winter and road construction.
Tonopah is roughly halfway. It's location as midpoint--about 210 miles or so out of Vegas, another 240ish to Reno--means that there are more amenities available. I'd fuel up there, just be advised that it'll be more expensive.
Don't get lost in Yerington. Pull up Google Maps before you leave and take a look, maybe even print out the page.

Watch for the bomb dump. You'll see the bunkers on both sides of 95, just south of Fallon when you come down out of the mountains. Expect some snow in the pass this time of year.
