Just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this question. I'm signed up for the USPS "Informed Delivery" service. If you're not aware, one of the things it does is it sends you an email every day with pictures of the mail that is supposed to be delivered to you each day. Usually, at least a couple of times a week, there will be a picture of a piece of mail that doesn't arrive. If I sign on to my "dashboard" on the USPS website, the pictures of each item are there, and there is a little box you can check that says, "I didn't receive the mailpiece". My question is, what does this do? I've never received any follow-up from USPS about this. No, "sorry, it'll be in tomorrow's mail," or any indication of what might happen or if I will ultimately get it. Many times it does show up, the next day or so, but occasionally, it never shows. So my question really is, does that little checkbox actually do anything or is it just to make me feel better?

We have been using the service for years, only item I have not received was a package from Timney. USPS said it was delivered, but I did not receive it. It was insured and Timney replaced it and shipped the replacement with FedEx.

Overall a good service offered by the post office.

To my knowledge- there is still no one dedicated to following up when you check that box. Supposed to have been, but constant budget cuts stopped that before it was launched. Also, those images you see are usually, but not necessarily, that day’s mail. Those images are taken at a processing center that may be in the state next to your state. Sometimes those mail pieces did not make it to the DBCS machine (sorter/processor) in time for sorting and loading onto the truck that brings the mail to your post office.

I've never even noticed that although as you have experienced it doesn't do anything. Not that I'm surprised.

I do this too.
I have also checked this box, there are things that I have never gotten and as far as I know nobody does anything about it. The only feedback I have ever received is a note that says "It can take up to 7 days to receive a particular mail piece."

So I take it this is a pay service. Imagine that, they want to charge you so you can ensure that they do the job they are being paid for. Yep, sure sounds like a government operation to me.
You should not ASSUME, it's a free service.....

If you’re not happy with the service just unsubscribe from it.

My Wife uses this service. I guess it works okay, but the downside is I cannot have anything delivered via USPS and keep it a secret. Gee honey, what've you got coming from shopruger? Or from the cigar supplier? Or Midway? Or Diamond-D? 😮
My wife called me from Powder Springs Georgia a couple of days ago to ask if I knew that UPS had left me a package on the porch from Target Sports. Thing is, I was at home in Iuka Mississippi when she called....So yeah, to your point, the thought did occur to me that if I was a hen-pecked guy wouldn't stand a chance. LOL.

Delivery? USPS? The two don't seem to go together.

Example: My daughter mailed me a check for my birthday in November 2024. Never got it, so she did replace it. It did arrive in a tattered evelope. I January of this year she got the original check. Just the check, no evelope.

The service is free. If an item that was supposed to be delivered on a specific day doesn't arrive, it generally comes the next day. Or the one after that. Or never.
Exactly right! I spoke to the local Postmaster once and she told me it indicated the items that were on the way, not promised for deliver on any date. I always check the box on missing items that day, and they eventually show up. As good as it gets for a business that otherwise be bankrupt.

Attorney sent me an email yesterday, with a copy of the letter he was mailing yesterday explaining what he had done correcting a major mistake. It will never arrive and it will not be the fault of USPS.
Fool attorney didn't use my complete address.

I had three Kimber magazines mailed to me from the adjoining state in a USPS mailer. They were routed back and forth from one post office sorting center to the next and never made it to my home. I followed up with the tracking number at my local post office four times over an eight day period. I was finally informed my package had been delivered to a residence in a town several miles away. They actually had a photo of it. It had been altered with a stick-on label which was placed over my address.
They REFUSED to retrieve the package and REFUSED to do anything to assist with returning my property to me.
I will never mail of ship anything of value via USPS again.

Hell, the USPS loses BILLIONS OF DOLLARS of it's own money every year. THIS should tell us something...

Never said I wasn't happy with it. Although, to use a service I don't think it requires you to be "happy", it just has to be useful, which it usually is. If you go back and read my question, I was asking if the "I didn't get this mailpiece" checkbox actually did anything.

How the service works ( or doesn't in this case ) only proves that you're gonna get your mail ~ or not. And either way there ain't a thing we can do about it. If they're not even gonna answer your inquiry or complaint …. Why bother with it?

The "service" just seems like another of life's distractions that takes time away from more productive things.

Some time back, i ordered some bits from an european source, but at the p.o., the worker put the package in the neighboring box, where another low-attention person put 'return to sender' on it, rather than 'please forward'; it had been posted as delivered. i immediately file a no, it wasent, and eventually got the story, and an apology from p.o. worker, and the newbie clerk with the other box who mislabelled it, and they caught up with it at jamaica bay on the way back to the (pre-war) ukraine. My most extream postal story to date.
Dhl seems to only open my packages that have wirstwatches in them...

"They REFUSED to retrieve the package and REFUSED to do anything to assist with returning my property to me."
In the past somewhere on a placard or signage was a phone number for US Postal Inspectors plastered inside the customer lobby of ALL Post Offices. If someone has a complaint that isn't being handled to the customer's satisfaction(especially if it involves theft), a call to the 'Inspectors' usually gets some sort of response. Not always and this may have changed since I retired but it used to work this way.
FWIW, there are lots of postal employees who really have no idea of what's right or wrong and mostly just follow whatever shaky/shady instructions they're given. The rural carrier who delivers my mail is a guy I helped obtain his job and he comes to me with all sorts of questionable stuff he's been told by management. Stuff that I wouldn't have tolerated or allowed when I was a Postmaster has become commonplace and deemed acceptable. :(

One check i sent, was so late the recipient asked why i hadent paid. I was ready to cancel the check and write another when it got RTS'd to me, looking like it had been walked on for a month, with the address 'unreadable'. I took 2 pics, put it as-is in another envelope, and resent it, never again did they ask why it took 2 or 3 weeks on average for the check to travel 45 miles.

My mail goes to one of those community box deals down the street at the gas station so I don't get it very often. After losing my job I got it even less because there was no reason to leave the house.
So I signed up for this to "see" if there was any "good" mail to go get.
The service seems to have some bugs in it as I will get the same pictures on different days of the same piece of mail.

Seems ignorance is bliss.... There are days I feel I should cancel the service but I guess it does more good than bad.

Thats my 2 cents worth on the subject. Take care,

I have checks sent to my P O box and I've been thinking the informed delivery photo thing would be good to let me know if I should go and check my mail there.
I just wonder how that works.... are they only selecting the mail coming to you for this or are they actually doing it for all mail... and if it is only for 'you' does that slow down the delivery even more?
Here's the latest mail delivery story... I did some work for a neighbor and left the bill in his mail box on his front porch... seems he went to my post office and mailed the check to me and told the clerk it was for a P O box there... they still put it in the regular outgoing mail and it took a week for it to get back to my P O Box... this is all in town. I think I will mail myself something today and see how long it takes...

with all that said, I still think what the Postal System does is just amazing... and even considering turning it over to Elon or whom ever is just stupid.

Have the Vendor re-ship or follow up with the USPS. Failing that, contest the Bank Card Charge; you have evidence of non-delivery.

You can sign up now to get an email when your mail is delivered. My cluster mailbox is fairly far from my house and I don't walk it unless I get something important in the mail. Now I know when to go. Service works pretty good.
