Tales of medical practices long ago will get you killed. "In the old days," before antibiotics, you might have had a better chance of surviving a gunshot if they didn't operate, as the surgery was likely to be as lethal as the bullet. Things are a whole lot different today. What was done even 10 years ago may be ancient history in medicine.
Bullets are not sterile. They carry fabric, dirt, etc. into the wound.
Alcohol should not be poured into an open wound. It is NOT a good sterilizing agent, and will destroy tissue, possibly causing greater infection.
Bullets are left in when:
1) Removing the bullet would be dangerous, due to proximity to vessels or nerves.
2) The doctor doesn't want to bother with it.
3) It isn't needed as evidence.
The human body is a remarkable thing, and can survive trauma and infection, even in spite of poor medical practices---and drunken doctors.
