Local pawn shop has an unconverted .357 blued blackhawk, I think 6 1/2" barrel. I would guess it to be classified as "moderate" condition - seems pretty tight, but shows typical cylinder line and grip wear. RENE indicates it's a mid-sixties mfg. I think the $700 price tag is out of line, but what price range would be reasonable?

Unless there is something really special we don't know about $700 is from $300-$350 too high for this area and even for the careful lurker on Gunbroker. JMHO however.

I think(?) that the gun you are describing is what I like to call a "shooter grade" gun. Assuming that the lockwork is servicable, that there aint no timing or end-shake issues, and that it still has the correct grips, I'd expect to pay about $350 for such a critter around here.
Just as a point of reference, that $700 that your guy wants will easily buy you a very-nice FT, or an even nicer (boxed) RX3-RED gun....and you might even get some change back.

Thanks guys - that's kind of what I suspected. I'm not much interested in the gun myself, but thought I'd check. I hope I'm not missing "something special", as I'm no collector. When I was looking at the gun and saw the price tag, I commented that I was hoping he didn't realize what it was worth. He got a big kick out of that. I imagine he'll be trading it and/or using that price as a starting point. If anyone is interested in it I'd be glad to go check it out some more - he's an FFL and could ship it to anywhere it's legal.

$700 should get you a nice pair. Unfortunately, there are more and more dealers trying to get rich off every sale and more and more morons that think any Old Model Ruger (or S&W, or Colt) is worth its weight in gold.

yep, depends also on the serial number and just ,EXACTLY what model it maybe (flattop??) 2 or 3 digit?? as well as condition and packaging, besides, thats the "asking"?? price folks usually start 'high' and can always go down, and if a pawnshop be open to offers..see that happen all the time, some GOOD deals may be had........

From what you told us, it's a XR3 RED 3 screw with ears around the rear sight in 6 1/2". IMO the only thing that would give that model a premium since it's a 6 1/2" is if it had the steel rear sight marked MICRO. But any premium is mostly negated by the condition you describe. And if it's mid '60s production, it's too late for a MICRO sight. So I'd say the dealer is just chummin' for a sucker. And if he figured out a prospective sucker didn't know better, he'd probably promote it as a Flat top.
A local dealer advertised a 3 screw 44 Mag Flattop. I drove into town to check it out and you guessed it! It was a 3 screw Super and beat up at that. In his case it was an honest mistake, he thought any Blackhawk or adjustable sighted Ruger SA was a flat top.

I bought two in the last 4 years for $300.00 apiece. All the rest I have seen since have been $400.00 plus. I think $400-$450 is about right for a nice one unless of course its a flattop.

Nice buy for a transition model 357. :wink: Can't tell about the ejector rod housing but if it's steel, then it's a real good buy. :lol: :lol:
