In the AZ oven (Phoenix basin)
I have been trying to cancel my old phone number for three months now.
I have notified CenturyLink by phone (twice) and in writing (twice, by mail
and twice by E-mail . . . four total) and they still keep billing me; AND still
keep sending E-mail "past due" notices.

Out of the voice, I keep getting put on hold once I get a person to talk
with. After about twenty minutes on hold I hang up. I'll bet that is how they
are going to deny I did the voice cancellation. That still leaves four times
cancelling IN WRITING, two with signature. One of those was with my last
payment, so I know they received it (cancelled check), and the second
one I put FINAL NOTICE in red ink and bold face type (overwrote it
several times).

I just wonder WHY they will threaten to disconnect the number when you
want it, but will . . . not . . . disconnect it when you do not want it. I'll bet
that's it. Need it and they have you over a barrel; don't want it and THEY
are the ones that ends up without service/income.

A complaint to your State Attorney General may get their attention too. You can likely do that on the Atty Gen web site.

"Maybe filing a complaint with the FCC might help. I don't suffer fools like this lightly."

THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

A simple form, found on the FCC website,,, filled out, copied & printed, then sent, will get action. Then, if they put anything on your credit report, another formal complain to the FCC, your state attorney's office & the BBB,,, will get action.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
If they ding your credit over this it could be profitable for you as long as you've documented your efforts to cancel. The return receipt is a good idea working towards this.

We actually had to do something like this with the N.C. insurance commission.... sold our mountain house on Dec 31 2015 and of course called the homeowners insurance carrier and informed them...... renewal was not due until June.... starting April we got bills for renewal, my wife calls and informs them we not longer own the house... June comes around and we start getting rude letters about all the things that can happen if we don't pay the bill..... phone calls were useless.... letter was useless... call to the state insurance commission finally got a result....

Tried again by phone and ended up with a guy that said his name was
Cheryl, and was thoroughly underwhelmed. He kept trying to get me to
sign up for "updated" service. I yelled at him and he then changed to WHY
would I want to disconnect. At which point I asked him if he wore a hearing
aid, and he then told me I had multiple months left on my contract. At which
point I asked AFTER 40 YEARS?!

I then told him I would file written complaint to the Public Utilities Commission.
And hung up.

So there.
Complaint filed.

:D

I hope the PUC will do something with it,
but I'm not optimistic, .gov and all that.

I did find one other "gotcha" with their renegotiating your price each year.
When you do that, they consider it a NEW contract for service. Thus will
try to bill you for the entire amount, service used or not.

I'm with Verizon now and they have gone no-contract on all their stuff.
They sure leave a lot to be desired, but compared to CenturyLink, they
are an improvement.
