I too would say trigger and sights....
Sights either replacing the iron sights with fiber optic, scope, red dot, or my choice the tech sight styled aperature sights.

I wudnt say that ammo is an upgrade.... That is the fun part... Shooting and figuring out what can do what.

I s'pose a barrel would be the other biggest improvement, but for what they are, and the original cost, the 10/22 is pretty accurate from the start.
Lots of argument about the pros/cons of the newer plastic trigger groups, but from my experience, the triggers on the newer plastic trigger groups are awful. I've changed every one of them to either an original all-metal trigger group, or replaced them with the complete Volquartsen trigger group.

WAYNO.
An improved trigger will not increase the accuracy of the rifle itself in any way. (If the gun benchrests at 2" at 50 yards, it will still shoot 2" groups at 50 yards with the world's best trigger on it.) However, a better trigger can and likely will improve your ability to utilize whatever inherent accuracy it has from field positions. (I've shot tiny groups from rifles with crummy triggers from a sandbagged benchrest. But get up off the bench and the trigger becomes more critical.)
As to sights, I suggest you decide on either a scope or a good "peep" and concentrate on that to the exclusion of the other. "See-through" scope mounts aren't a very good solution, and in fact introduce a couple new problems to your shooting enjoyment. If you simply must have both, I'd recommend looking at systems that allow you to quickly detatch the scope and then remount it to its original position (to retain POI), rather than "see-through" or "look under" mountings.
