Time for MY Gripe

Laying in bed last night, we kept hearing the well pump kick on and off; Finally got up and went out to look and there is the water softener dripping loads of water, seems a piston thingy got stuck, not only over heating the unit, but also making the pump cycle off and on. Unplugged the (water retention construction) and turned on the by pass valves. Can't complain too much, the softener was here when we bought in 2007 and had been installed way back in 2000 when the place was new (Mfg Home). We DID have to replace a timer motor, but its worked great since then (Well ALMOST great, had to go out and Manual start the "recycle" and then back out to kick it to the next phase). The cure was the replacement of the entire upper unit and it would have cost around $400. ( a neighbor who was in the well business told us a year ago that we needed to look installing a new unit as the resin tank was probably getting plugged up)
SO any ways, looked things up on the Puter, compared Sears, Home Depot, and Lowes. Lowes close to home, had better ratings on their Whirlpool units ( we have hard water and a high iron content too ).
Short end, we bought the 44,000 unit, handles Iron up to 12 PPM, hardness to the 44,000 level and it was "ONLY" $497. Fished out my VA card and got veteran's discount ($49-50) and hauled the thing home. Old one is half buried in the ground, so spent the afternoon digging out the "whatchamacallit" tank and brine tank, shoveled out most of the Salt ( just put in less than a month ago) and then gave up for the night. Gotta go tomorrow and pick up some fittings to adapt our old pipe run to the new unit (they sent an installation kit, BUTTTT!!) , you know HOW THAT goes.
Anyway, the GOOD part of the day was the Hibachi I ordered on line from Amazon showed up, spent about 30 minutes assembling it, loaded it with charcoal and did a couple of steaks for dinner. It's not as good as the one I had years ago when I lived aboard my ketch out in Calif, that one made the trip to Maryland and then down to Orlando, but sometime, my bratty daughter decided to do some spring cleaning and it disappeared. I suppose the new one will do for the now and then grilled steak or burger; Hard to complain about a $24 unit made in China.

I won't rub it in too much but there is something to be said for city water, trash/garbage/recycling pick up and police/fire protection.

Glad you didn't go for the reverse osmosis units. Daughter uses one of
those in Phoenix (suburb actually). They love the results, BUT they ignore
the fact that the reverse osmosis units flush 3/4ths of the water you "use"
down the drain as it back flushes the filter.

That's one of the few advantages of living in Colorado (even with all
the liberals mooooving in), water is still GOOD!

I pay for ntrash pickup thank you and I pay for electricity; Stick city water where the sun don't shine (Check out Flint Michigan and the other places that "Over medicate" the water supply) and thanks too we DO have the Pasco county Sheriff and fire department which we pay taxes for. I'll stick with my OWN water supply because you'd have to soften and De-Iron the city water any way. Hows that recycked swamp water you get to drink down in South Florida (I REMEMBER seeing ORANGE stripes on homes where the yard sprinklers hit).

Those orange stains on houses and sidewalks are from the iron in the water. Around here some wells get it and some don't. Last well I had for lawn watering was clean and clear, good enough for drinking. City water makes no stains.

btw There is a reclaimed water main in front of my house that they just put in but it is for watering the grass at the hospital up the road a ways.

I'm still on well water, it's 375 feet down, mom's is 480. The folks across the road all have piped in water from some district. They ALL complain about the taste and need for water softeners as well as the crud that gets on their faucets even with softeners. Until they condemn wells in my area I will stick with well water, and yes they have tried to condemn wells in our area. This area is mined for zinc.
Nothing like sweet deep east tn well water.

My well is 100 feet deep. Dug by raising the bit then dropping it, fracturing the rock as they went. They hit water 65 feet down. The rest was to have a reservoir. Good taste.

My wells down 375' too. I'm sure your east tn. water is good, but ours tastes great too. No chlorine, fluoride or assorted heavy metals. Ironically I live fairly close to the reservoir that feeds the city. I'm just glad it's not piped in my direction.

In Northwest Arkansas where we used to live,the influx of turkey and chicken farms made our well unusable.
Fortunately the rural water system was put into operation about that time,so all was good as far as water was concerned,but the poultry farmers did not have to contribute to any of the costs incurred by us and others.

575 foot deep well here in the sun bleached Arizona desert. Best water I've ever had the pleasure to use! Good for 48,000 gallons a month * 8.
