too bad i love it so much. the barrel will never be right, so i got to wondering, why not have it rebored to .475/ .480? does anyone offer such service? that will be the only way to remove these "craters of the moon".

Might be cheaper to buy 480 Ruger Bisley or a Freedom Arms revolver and sell the Bisley you have.

Lots of folks offer this service but it involves a new barrel and cylinder, rather than reboring.

I don't know what the dimensions of Ruger's .454 barrel are, but your barrel can probably bne rebored to .475/.480. Not certain if the cylinder could be rechambered or not; they're made of a special alloy. At any rate, it would almost certainly be less expensive to sell what you have and buy what you want.

I believe David Clements can rebore a barrel. Or at least he has a contact with someone who provides that service.

Barrel reboring is a very iffy situation. The only shop doing it was Delta Gun Shop, formerly Cliff LaBounty Reboring. The owner died recently and their future is uncertain.

That said, you'll be money ahead to go with a new barrel anyway.

Call Jack Huntington.

Buy the Freedom Arms gun. Get a Premier Grade and it will be lifetime guaranteed to you as the original owner. Trust me on this (and I am an S&W guy) there is no finer revolver made.
Mine is an older Premier Grade FA-83 with the removable forcing cone and a 4 5/8" bbl. I sent it back to FA and had 45acp and 45 Colt cylinders fitted to it. I can put a box of 45acp in one ragged hole at 30 yards with it. I thought about a 45 Win Mag cylinder but haven't done it yet.

I believe Al Seigrist is still in the reboring business. I have two Harton built 38 WCF's, an old flattop and a S&W M28 so barreled.

Possibly. Even when it was easier to get a barrel rebored, it was of limited utility and it always added at least six months to lead times. It was usually $150 for a rebore or $200 for a new barrel made from premium stock. It's so easy to make a new barrel for a Ruger single action that I see no reason to bother trying to get one rebored. Unless for some reason I wanted to keep the OM barrel markings, I'll opt for a new barrel every time. That goes double if I'm doing a five shot conversion.

Double actions are a different story because barrels for them are not so easily made. They often have integral ejector shrouds, ribs or sight bases. For those a rebore may be the only option.
