I was waxing eloquent on another forum and mentioned I learned the basics of shooting from a book. My first "gun book" was the Daisy Red Ryder Handbook."

From this book I learned the basics of sight picture and trigger squeeze. I applied what I learned as circumstances permitted, which was not too often in those days. And gun safety. And how to shoot standing in the stirrups, which I never did. And also to hold my toes outward when shooting from the prone. Little tidbits like that to further my educstion.

And the worst thing a man could call another man was "Hoss thief!"

Yep, kids' literature sure has changed over the years!

I too learned to shoot from a book, The Complete Book of Modern Handgunning by Jeff Cooper et al, c 1961, and several years before I'd even held a real handgun, much less shot one. Now 60+ years old, it is still a valuable reference and manual.

I was shooting in my youth but actually learned to shoot once I went to boot camp. That M-1 sure got heavy.

My dad taught me how to shoot. Marlin 39A w/4x weaver scope he paid $50 for new in the '50s. Shot a lot of gophers with that gun.

My old man didn't like BB guns, so I started 59 years ago with this 22 rifle. Still have it in the safe.
