Saw a hummingbird this morning at my kitchen window where I usually keep a hummingbird feeder. So I fixed up some homemade mix and put it out. I love to watch those little guys!

Yep, they are natures jewels! Back when I had a houseboat, my neighbors put out feeders, and I would sit and watch by the hours!

:D Hummingbirds are nature's little wonders. They migrate from the Carribean and Mexico each year all the way to the Northern U.S. When agitated they can put on moves that would put an Apache helicopter to shame. I won't see them till mid July on Cape Cod and they don't stick around long. They only exist in the New World and when hard-core birdwatchers (life-listers) come over from Europe they are number one on the must see list. :D Cape Cod Terry

Hi,
I have one year 'round resident bird, a "big" (in hummingbird terms) male I call Harry. Others are just starting to show up. And when they do, Harry will make it difficult for them to get to either of the feeders, just as he has for the last couple of years. Territorial little critters, ya know?

We've had a number (4 - 6) in our back yard all winter, but now they seem to be mostly gone. Headed for the more temperate (in the summer) north I guess.
Be a while before ours come back. Did get a bat in the house that caused a 3am rodeo here last night. Wish I knew if it was a migrant come back, or a hibernant come out. Had one last year just a week later, last year. Brook trout net was laid out in prep for upcoming Penn trout season, so the catch was kinda easy, except for the Lab wanting to "help".

I saw one in North Texas at my in-laws Saturday, first I'd seen this year. Also got pictures of a couple of Canada geese waddling around. Over the years a group of them have stopped migrating, and stay around this small lake (Arrowhead) year 'round.
We feed them all winter but they have been back in larger numbers for over a month around here.
Just got two new feeders, the old ones were getting so they had almost clear rather than red bottoms. Will set up my 'mix' and get them hung today.

I think the word you are looking for is: They're, as in "They are", not their, which is possessive in nature. Just saying. :)#1rugerman said:

I use the 4:1 ratio of water to cane sugar mix that seems to be a "standard" among all the folks I know who feed the little guys. (Four cups water, one cup sugar.) I bring it to a boil and let it cool, some just mix it in warm water. No coloring is added.
I've read some of the stories about how other kinds of sugar, and some coloring agents, may be hard on the birds' systems. Also learned only in recent years that the sugar water or nectar from flowers just provides "junk calories," quick energy for them to go hunting! They're actually supposed to be carniverous critters, eating tiny bugs, which is where they get their protein and fat.

Pretty, and vicious little beasts! A hornet staked his claim to a hummingbird feeder on a floating restaurant. The hummers were angry and ganged up on the hornet, driving him off. Then it was business as usual between the hummers. Quite a show to go with the meal.

My sister used to run a church camp, they had a old clothes line that they hung feeders on, they had about 20 feeders spaced about 5 feed apart. It looked like a swarm of bees at times. Talk about aerial war fare. I keep 2 feeders and at times they really go at it. Usually each feeder has a guard bird that tries to keep others away, but I have seen several feeding at one time. Some days they go thru 1 or 2 cups of liquid in a day. They get real vocal when the syrup runs out.
