The "Singularity" in 10 years?

Quite possible we will see self aware computers by 2030. Maybe Chinese, but you can bet your last dollar somebody will do it.

Yesterday, China released a “national AI development plan” which committed it to spending $22.15 billion (£17 billion) on AI research by 2020 and $59.07 billion (£45 billion) by 2025.

China wants to square up to Western market leaders including Google and Microsoft, who are racing ahead in the development of smart computers.

“The local and central government are supporting this AI effort,” said Rui Yong, chief technology officer at PC maker Lenovo Group.

Rui said officials back AI because it is seen as the latest “industrial revolution” similar to the advent of the combustion engine, electricity or the internet.

“They see the fourth industrial revolution as coming, (and think) we better invest and support and build a very strong ecosystem,” said Rui.

Robert Heinlein saw this coming 50 years ago ; "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress". Let us hope that the real thing is as nice as Heinlein's self aware computers.

I have a hard time believing that a self aware computer is only 13 years away. Computer CPU's are two dimensional with very limited interconnections. All organic brains are three dimensional with the cells interconnected in many and complicated ways. Our brains are mostly self programing.

Although controversial, I (and the smarted physicist I have ever known) believe that the human brain is actually a quantum computer. Quantum computers are still just a dream with just a few bits of interconnection.

The biggest super computer in the world has, on paper, more storage and speed than the human brain. All it really has is thousands of CPU's wired together in 2D. It requires 10 million watts of power and massive amounts of programming. The human brain uses 20 watts. If the human brain is a quantum computer then we are millions of times more complicated than this Chinese super computer.

I suspect that we are centuries away from self aware computers.

I think all AI developers should be required to read Azimov's robotic laws.

Exavid, Good point, Asimov's laws were genius. He once admitted that, while first watching "2001 A Space Odyssey", he yelled aloud in the movie theater that Hal (IBM) was violating his laws.

I wonder if anyone thought to tell Asimov to sit down, that "2001 A Space Odyssey" was just a movie.
