Just finished buying a RPR in .264 Creedmoor(hehe) and would like to know the best way to break in the barrel...How many shots at a time? How Long in between? Is there a specific amount od time and barrel temp between volleys of rounds fired? ...I know I'll get the encyclopedia Britannica on this topic, but with the help of a lot of answers I might find solution that works best.... and yes, I'm sure there is or isn't a way to do things, but hey, I'm just looking to find a good solution for a brand new rifle that I'll be using for long distance steel plate and precision target shooting... Please be as informative and descriptive as possible....Answering this question with a question inside of a question isn't much good... Have fun with this one and remember, most replies are good info in the all around scope of things too....Like I heard before, sometimes 2 heads are better then 1...In this case, maybe a lot of heads are better than 2,3,4 or more....Enjoy...Thanks for the info...

Savage has their barrel break-in procedure on their website.https://www.savagearms.com/expert-advice/barrel-break-in/ That may get you started.

Check the websites for barrel manufacturers on break-in of their barrels, they generally supply good information.

Below are links to a couple of decent ones:

http://riflebarrels.com/support/centerfire-maintenance/

There is no given number of shots, each barrel is different and it depends on how rough the machine marks and how badly it copper fouls during the break in process.

I've done this on three hunting rifles recently that I thought might be sensitive to improper break-in or overheating (.308, .308, and .30-06). Takes about 2 boxes of ammo:

1. clean whole rifle and barrel thoroughly with cleaner of choice.

2. fire one shot, run a brush through the barrel. Do for 10 shots total, using a bore brush in between shots. Make sure barrel is not excessively hot before next shot. Clean barrel thoroughly with brush and solvent patch after last shot.

3. Shoot 10 more shots without cleaning in between, making sure barrel is not hot in between shots. Maybe wait like a minute or two in between. If barrel gets too hot, let it cool. Clean after the 10 shots with solvent patch and brush.

4. Shoot as fast as you can getting the barrel hot. I typically will dump a 4-round magazine quickly, then dump another one, and maybe one more depending on barrel heat. Clean again and shoot away.
