The 2014 FIFA World Cup

Although I never watch soccer I find I'm drawn to the FIFA World Cup games that are conveniently broadcast on ESPN. Hey how about the USA win over Ghana? Watched the whole thing and didn't miss a second or a goal. Am I crazy?

The US plays again Sunday /22nd at 5:30 against PORTUGAL. I think I read that right.

I'm not a soccer fan per say but I always watch as much of the World Cup as possible. To me it's schematically very similar to hockey, which I love to watch.
I just don't care for it as a sport enough to get into it full time. Once every 4 years gets me my fill.

The British announcer is funny when he says things like the ball was served-up piping hot or the lads are fine they just lack discipline. Poor England just lost again and I guess they are out. One of the funniest things happened at the first USA game when the announcer said President Biden was attending the game???

Reffed Youth, High School and Adult soccer for over 20 years; Worked as a volunteer during the Atlanta Olympics when they played soccer at the Citrus bowl in Orlando, Got an Olympic official soccer ball, FIVE different FIFA pins, Numerous team pins,met people from Australia, Poland < former FIFA World Cup Ref and his wife>; Slovakia, Austria, Botswana(met his Son and his NEW daughter-in-law and they took me out to Breakfast).
Had an arm band that let through ALL the security and into ANY where in the Stadium. I watched the last two games played there from the FIFA box and ENJOYED their delicious Buffet !!!
Yeah, I like Soccer.

NOT hooked, though I'm not much of a "sports fan," either.

I've watched part of a couple of games with my wife.
Pro: most/all of those athletes are in awesome condition.
Con: the cheap shots, as well as the "acting" to make minor or inadvertent fouls look egregious.

I can appreciate that basically all you need to play is a ball, and (hopefully) a pair of shoes. Good deal, for folks who are less "fortunate" than most of us.

As a kid in the 1970's, soccer was going to be the "next big thing" in America. Same story in the 80's, 90's, 2000's... you get the idea. For whatever reason, soccer can't seem to gain the traction here that it has over most of the world.

Of course, we were also going onto the metric system soon (1977, maybe?) and there was a predicted ice age coming, as well! :mrgreen:

My take, as well. It also seems like a giant game of "keep away," to me.

I've never liked "keep away," probably because I was always the fat kid.

Suit me up for American football, though... I'm going to run you over!

That is correct. So far we have advanced into the final group of 16 teams and our first game of the semi-finals is with Belgium. Tuesday, July 1, 4:00 PM

To get there these were our results in the three games in group 'F'.

Mon, Jun 16 ---- USA vs. Ghana ------ Win - 2 - 1 Final
Sun, Jun 22 ---- USA vs. Portugal ---- Draw 2 - 2 Final
Thu, Jun 26 ---- USA vs. Germany --- Loss - 0 - 1 Final

Even though we lost to Germany we had enough points to advance to the semi-final group of 16 teams.

The Tour de France is one the best sporting events of the summer. It's like nascar with real athletes and no deafening noise.

To my way of thinking US football (even Aussie Rules football) is the real game, and, the ONLY game in town! 8)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah I remember three seasons for sports, Baseball, Football and then Hockey. Those were the days.

SURPRISE: More kids play youth soccer in the USA than play Little League Baseball OR Pop Warner football; MOST "Private/Christian" Schools have Soccer teams BUT NOT football teams

HEY; GUESS WHAT; SOCCER IS A MUCH OLDER SPORT here in the USA than American Football AND the Original Name was "American FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION" which got shortened to "Football Association" and then to "Association" and finally abbreviated to "Soccer" ; Then along came the slow lumbering American sport with Super padding and STOLE the name "Football" which should REALLY be called "HANDBALL" because it's mainly CARRIED rather than Kicked.
