All the boys from Tennessee are named Jed. First or last name or nickname and most can play the banjo. All the Family on my Dad’s side were cliffapes from the Great Smoky Mountains. Tellico Plains, Etowah, Watts Bar Dam, and the Hiwasse River basin.

To me, Tennessee means mountains, catfish and hushpuppies, plowing the bottom land with the mules. Moonshine and bear hunting, running trot lines in the early morning fog. Snow covered cabins with logs smoldering in the fireplace. And Grandma with her hand crafted quilts.

I love Tennessee…

Am headin' fer camp in the Penn woods Fri.. You're invited. No banjos or musicians. But you can catch catfish, make hush puppies, shoot thangs, drink whatever. Lots of hills, rivers, trout, and my friends. Canoeing/yakking and such.

ED, Either like me you're older than dirt and remember, or just coincidence. When I was a kid before TV, we listened to radio programs, mostly serialized. There was Captain Midnight, Sky King was another and one that lasted only about a year The title? Tennessee Jed, deadliest man with a rifle. Don't remember much about it as it didn't last very long as I recall. There was one with Tom Mix although the real deal had been long dead. Shows varied through the week each one with a specific day to run. Saturdays there was Smilin' Ed McConnel with his pal (?) Froggy the Gremlin. I sent for one of the Froggy statuettes way back when and it sits on the shelf staring at me, waiting to strike when I'm not looking. Wonder if I can google old Jed up?

Yeah when I was stationed in Korea, we had a guy in Commo with us that was from Tennessee; He was always talking about hooking up the mule and going out to plow the back forty. He sure had the Twangy accent too; nice guy, but he fixated on a record (don't recall if it was the Train passing the prison or the Pink Ribbon around the old oak tree) He played it so many times over and over that someone distracted him while another guy sailed that record right out of the barracks window. Sorry I missed it !!

Tennessee wasn't bad when I was a kid and my Dad was stationed at Millington Naval Base, we'd go out in the country and pick LOADS of Blackberries along the road ways (DAMN CHIGGERS) and my Mom (AN Old Missouri/Oklahoma Country girl) would make cobbler and Blackberry Jam. Dad was also a Laic preacher and would be invited out to small Church of Christs in te country to give a sermon on a Sunday; ALWAYS got invited some whee for Sunday dinner afterward--MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM !! GREAT.
Really Nice people !!

The only commercialized Tennessee Jed that I remember was a chain of rib and burger restaurants that tried it for a while in Ohio many years ago. "Tennessee Jed's"

And Levon Helm, rest his soul, did the best version of the song...

Ain't named Jed but I can see the Clinch mountains as well as House mountain from the front yard and the Smokey mountains from top of the ridge at the back.
I pity flat landers.
