Temperature. How low can it go?

I have spent time in the Arctic working, and have experienced, walked, shot guns etc at -20* F. Now I am in Tn and the Arctic misses me and has come for a visit! It is 0600, and 9*F on the Highland Rim. I know others have colder. I am not complaining, my dog and I have already made our 0.5 mile walk this AM. We didn’t linger, but we didn’t run either lol!

It's a balmy 20* here in north MO at this time. I was out working at the shade tree work bench yesterday afternoon--work fast and wear gloves so your hands don't freeze to the tools. We're forecast for another short cold snap and then 8-10 days of chilly but not way below zero temps with no precip.
Keep in mind that farmers don't like really warm weather-once the mud is frozen it's better that it stays that way.

Just under 20 degrees this morning at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks.

Yesterday morning at about 6 AM, it was a balmy 3 degrees above (with wind chill of Ohmigod!) when I went out to start my car. Uff da, it felt like Minnesota out dere, yah, you betcha. :wink:

When I got my lazy butt up at 0800 it was 14° with a wind chill of 7° in north east Maryland. It has warmed up now (09:56); it is 18° and 12°w/c. My buddy in Murrells Inlet SC is telling me that the 'sunny South' has a 10th inch of ice on it.

17 degrees here in Central NJ, wind about 9MPH. In the winters of 1976-1977 and 1993-1994 we had several 0 and subzero days. In one of the Paul Bunyan stories one winter it was so cold that whenever anyone spoke their words froze in the air. When the spring thaw came they all melted at once and there was an awful racket.

I have a cabin in northern Minnesota. The closest town is Bigfork. Weather.com says the high for today will be 4 degrees, and tonight it will drop to -23. I grew up (contrary to what my wife says) in Hibbing, Minnesota.... I remember a temp of -47.

I grew up in Tullahoma. I don't remember it ever getting very cold there but it's been awhile. I barely remember getting snow.

The coldest I have ever seen was when I was in Korea. It got to -22*F in February of 1959. Thankfully, we had those Mickey Mouse boots.

It's 19 here in central Wa this morning. Temps have been in the high 30's to low 40's during the day and 20's at night. The 14" of snow we had 2 weeks ago has melted down to about 6"and is hard as a rock.

I live in northern TN. a little ways from gramps. We got hit by the tornados and these cold temps have made the walking a lot better than the muck we’ve been dealing with since the storms.
I’ll still be glad to see spring arrive.

A couple weeks ago we were promised extreme low temperatures and lots of snow. I put on my winter tires. Mostly, the weather didn't arrive.

Then just yesterday and the day before, we've been in the sixties. Go figure.

One Winter during the time I was going to the U of C we had it go below zero,
and stay that way for most of two weeks. That was a bit nasty.
(average high temp in Denver, in January, is just above 40 degrees).

Had another Winter in '83 that the average temperature ... for the entire
month of December . . . was 17 degrees (yes, seventeen). Unfortunately
I lived in a corner lot, so I got to shovel the snow across the front, and
all the way down the side (city issued tickets if it was not clear the day
after the snow stopped).

This morning I had to put on a flannel shirt over my cotton one to go
outside (56 degrees). The only reason I mention this is that someone
(not just one person) has harassed me about the Summer temperatures
here in the oven, since I moved to AZ. :wink:
Now we're even.

I look at these places people live, the temperatures they endure, and think to myself "Wild geese are smarter than people."

But then I remember we've got way too many people in CA and a lot of them are here because they are at least as smart as wild geese. Can't win with weather...

I had to fill a big roasting pan with hot coals from the woodstove and place them under the engine of my wifes VW Bug to get it started. We headed out on a 3 hr. trip from hell, scraping the ice off the inside of the windshield all the way. We were a lot younger and tougher back then. :lol:

We had a double handful of VW Bugs in the family over the years. A lot, but not all of them, were here in SoCal where weather's not the big challenge it is some places. Family members who did live in cold spots were quick to verify a Bug in truly cold weather would bring out the character in the hardiest of souls.

Yep, & I'm afraid that down farther south in Gasconade County, my mud's gonna thaw out. On the plus side, so far less mud than any of the last 3 winters. My cattle actually look clean, even below their knees.

So, How high is the price of gasoline there on the west coast these days ; I have a picture from 2018 showing regular unleaded at $3.13 a gallon.
