Knowing that a standard scope mounting on a 1022 should have the centerline of the scope and the barrel parallel, so that the scope will need to be in the “up” side of the adjustment range, I thought I would try to taper a scope base so that I could have the scope in its optical center. For a recent acquired scope, I measured that it required about 25 to 30 MOA from optical center to get on target
I determined the radius of the receiver was 3.5” and luckily that was the same as a section of 3” PVC pipe I had. Using my 1” lapping rod to hold the two rings and the base, I used a third ring with a piece of plastic in the groove clamp so that it set the angle I wanted. Basically the outboard end of the scope base and the outboard plastic would touch the pipe with the inboard end of the base about 0.030” high.
With a sheet of 160 grit on the pipe, I just slid the base back and forth down the length of the pipe. At first sanding the outboard end of the base, but gradually moving farther inboard as it tapered the base. When I noticed it was sanding at the inboard end of the base I stopped so that the curved under side would make contact its length with the receiver.
This had the taper about 26MOA. I was pleased when I test fired today at “targets of opportunity” and was close enough to be on target so that I need to shoot some paper to fine tune the adjustments.
Unfortuantely I was in a hurry to cut some metal and didn’t put a lot of thought in all the details. The big one was I tapered the base the wrong way so I had to mount it with just the two end screws.
