Is the Talo BH any easier to carry than a Vaquero Sheriff? How much smaller and lighter is it than a Old Model Sheriff?

I was wondering the same thing, I did finally get to heft one of the New Vaquero's in 45 acp the other day. I didn't have my Vaquero birdshead handy, but I didn't think the New Vaquero felt nay lighter. I wear the Vaquero Birdshead IWB from time to time, would have liked to tried the New Vaquero for that.

My 45 ACP New Vaquero Stainless Bird's Head is only a couple of oz. lighter than my (Original) 45 Colt Vaquero Stainless BH. It is a bit smaller and has the new cyl indexing that lines up the chamber with the ejection port on the 'click' rather than before the 'click', something that I really like.
The grips are the same size and the grip panels are interchangeable between the two. (I found the Talo grips to be a bit slim).
I put a Super BlackHawk hammer on my (Original) Vaquero to match the low hammer on the New Vaquero BH.

do any of you find the wood used in the birdshead grip to be to slippery?

Yes, I handled both and with a stout load I think they would be a handful to hold onto. I shoot a birdshead .22 mag a lot and it is perfect but a full house .45, I don't know about that.

Felt recoil is different for everyone but I find the 45 Colt Birds Head to be just fine with normal loads. I've not tried 'heavy loads'.
(I have a 454 Alaskan for my 'heavy load' need, should it arise! :shock: )

Agree, I have shot so much recoil itself doesn't bother me but those grips feel real slippery. Kinda like a smooth knife when your'e cleaning a big fish beside a stream, oh man, can't wait till summer.)

how does your's shoot? mine with 230gr ball shoots high left , thats all i've had time to shoot thru it since i got it last month

I have not yet shot the ACP N. Vaquero. The (Original) Vaquero 45 Colt shoots POA for me with normal loads. (I'd have to get the box out to see what the load is - it is the 250 of so gr. bullet).

The smooth grips on the birdshead Vaquero havent bothered me any. I kind of like the "gun fighter" style that is on the New Vaquero birdshead but I haven't shot one. My 270gr 45 colt handloads in a stout load don't seem to be much different than a regular plow handle grip with the same loads. The 270's seem to print pretty close to POA. Shooting the 230gr ball in 45 acp print a couple inches lower when you get out around 15 yards or so.

Just my guess (I haven't done a side by side comparison), but I would think that the new birdshead would be very similar to carrying a 4" GP100. At least in size and weight.

Ruger lists the new birdshead as 37 oz and 9.0" in length.

The 4" GP is 40 oz and 9.5" long.

"Original" Vaquero .45 birdshead is 40 oz and 9.5" long (according to 2004 Ruger catalog)

"Original" Vaquero .45 non-birdshead 4 5/8" is 41 oz and 10.5" long (2004 Ruger catalog)
