On the way from Ruger to put on my two SBH's. Thanks to members who put part numbers on the forum. Special thanks to Chuck 100 yds for the "handholding" via PM.

My 44 spl is on its way to Ruger to hopefully have a pinned front sight base installed. I dont know why ruger doesnt offer that from the factory on every gun. Its a no brainer. Those fixed front sights are tha pits. And every one of mine is too short

Joe,

You are so right, they should. I have never had one too short with all the adjustable sighted Rugers I have. But have fixed a few for others simply by filing down the top edge of the rear sight blade.

I'm looking forward to seeing that one. I take it that you sent back a blue flat top Blackhawk. Did they agree to do it in advance? I've not heard of them doing that before since it's not a standard production feature on blued Blackhawks and they don't make a blue base milled with a slot for a blade pinned in place.

Oh well thats just great. Yes i am sending my blued flattop back and the girl said they would do but as enthusiastically as she said it, she was probably new and didn't know. Ha

Oh well. Figure i'll try. She sent me a call tag for it so im not out anything so far.

I guess if i have to settle for the taller front fixed sight i will. Durnit

I hold my front sight on my target or barely low. All of my stock blackhawks shoot 4-8" high at 25 yards.

Stock bbl. lengths/sights and shooting factory .44 mag. ammo?
4 5/8 inch barrels with adjustable rear sight, and pinned front sight. Factory 240 gr JSP, and reloads of 240 gr lswc over 24 gr W-296.

Mine that shoot high are with reloads. The 44 special is about 6" with 240 gr cast and 7.0 gr unique

My 44 mag was a cut to 5" shooting a 310 gr cast over 14 (i think) gr of 2400. 8" high

My 45 colt is a 7.5" OM shooting 300 gr cast over 21 gr of W 296. 6" high

Id have to check my notes for exact charges but i was within the published data on eberything but the special.

Very fortunate that you have stainless guns with pinned front sight blades. Of course if Ruger is doing it on their service policy, it doesn't matter much, just easier for them to fix.

gramps I had the same problem with my 3 screw super . The barrel had been cut to 5" and needed a taller front sight, I ordered one from Brownells .595 high and had it installed. It was to high and the gun was shooting low. I had to file the front sight down. There is a formula for sight height. sight radius x impact dis. ( the dis high or low from point of aim ) divided by target dis. I used it and it worked perfect for me. I hope this helps.

I don't know why Ruger doesn't make the SBH and BHK fixed rear sight and pinned front. I have had to fix my 41 & 357. I replaced the rears with Bowen and it fixed my problem. I have the handloads worked out for both guns and now the POI matches POA. I don't care for the 6 o'clock hold, much. I had Gallagher install the express front (Keith style brass bead) and it works. BHK

I installed .45 Colt front sight blades on three of my short barreled SBH`s to solve the high shooting issue. The .45 Colt sight blade is .095" taller than the stock .44 mag. blade. That put the point of impact right on with the rear sight close to the center of the adjustment range.. Here is a pic of one installed.

It worked for me. I just called Ruger and ordered blades for 5 1/2" BH SS .45 Colt.

WOW. the sights came in the mail today. Sudden service! Now to find someone with a vice, locate 1/16 drill and a drill press, and I'll be in business. :D

A drill press is not really necessary although the vise is IMHO. I drilled mine using a NEW 1/16" drill bit powered by my Makita cordless drill. The drill is guided by the existing hole and all your doing is punching a hole through the blade itself. Some drill part way from both sides but I don`t.
Do it with care and enjoy the new sight.

Cool! Insert the sight blade in the sight base. Insert the drill bit and twist by hand to give you a center mark. Then remove blade and deepen the dimple with a center punch. It will prevent enlarging the pin hole in the sight base.

Drill hole in blade on drill press or with hand drill with blade "C" clamped to flat surface if you have someone to help you 'eyeball' the drill bit to be perfectly vertical; or horizontal if clamped in a vice.

I see Chuck has posted a little different method.

There are many ways to skin a cat. Whichever one you feel comfortable with is the best one for you.
That reminds me of a video I saw once......
This little old Eskimo man was sitting cross legged on the floor of his igloo working on a carving made of bone or tusk. He took a primitive stone drill and a bow drill and drilled from one side of his project part way through. He then flipped the part over and eyeballed it and drilled the rest of the way through from the other side. His tool would not drill deep enough to go all the way through from one side.
When those two holes meet exactly in the center he held it up and peered through the hole with a knowing grin on his face. His skill level made him comfortable doing it "HIS WAY".

Yesterday I went to my son's house to take his dog back that I had been dog sitting while his wife was in the hospital having a baby. I took the 2 SBH's. As a lock smith he had the drill, drill bit, and an automatic center punch that he used to drive the pins out. Never used the vise. Quick and easy. Drilled the sight with it installed in the gun. Today I took them out to my range on the farm. Sighted in within 2 shots each-Sweeet. I ended up putting 40 full magnum rounds down range. Oh how wonderful to blow the centers out of a target!!! YEEE HAWW. One of them really likes the 240 gr lswc with 24 grs of w-296(the gun is picky, picky, picky), While the other one loved that load plus the 240 gr lswc with 19.5 grs 2400 that is my go to for .44 mag.

My 5.5" SS Bisley has the pinned in ramp sight, but I would like to replace it with a square backed sight to eliminate glare.

Does anyone market a square back replacement for the Ruger pinned in ramp?

And, yes I can do it if I can find an appropriate sight. I routinely replace the pinned in red ramps on my S&W's.

There's over a half a dozen Patridge sight blades like you describe on the Brownells website for under $10. I'm sure you can do a little shaping to match the bottom of the Ruger ramp sight you have now and make one work.
Some have a dovetailed base. On a Blackhawk blue gun, just cut off the original blade and dovetail one into your original base:

For single sixes, with the screw on front sight, Ruger makes the following Patridge sight replacement for $9 .420" high that screws on in place of the original ramp sight. On blue Blackhawk guns file the original base flat as well as the bottom of this one, screw it on and you won't have to re-blue.

I took the SBH that is picky about its ammo to the gun show today, and got it sold. All the vendors were talking about having lots of people looking, but not buying. Ammo prices all over the map, AR-15, 10's were from $1100 to 2000+. Lots of edged weapons with reasonable prices. I had a good day overall.
