Synthetic oil

I asked here what the heck was synthetic oil a few years ago....

Mainly because I thought most of the things we have today that are considered synthetic comes from oil.. from the ground.

what some of you or them back then explained to me is that synthetic oil does not come from the ground.. it is made from the basic elements of Hydrogen and Carbon and such...

There are synthetic blends that are a combination of petroleum and synthetic.

Read the fine print. Ever "pure" synthetic uses petroleum as the base for supplying hydrocarbons to make it. But what do I know, I just used to make the darned stuff.

Why use a synthetic blend? You have no idea what percentage of the base stock is synthetic.

In the US ultra refined dino oil is allowed to be called synthetic. That would be a Group III oil.
Group IV and V oils are true synthetics, made from ester or PAO base stocks.
Do your homework.
Mobil 1 (notice there is no E in Mobil) is a Group IV true synthetic unless that has changed.
There are plenty of synthetics with high levels of zinc. Again, do your homework.
For you farmer types, why aren't you using synthetics in the machines it pays off the most?
And those things inside the engine some call "tappets"? They aren't tappets. They are LIFTERS or followers. If they tap you have a bad engine.
All the tapping is done at the rocker arm/valve stem interface.
For those older engines sometimes synthetic isn't a good choice due to worn or hard rubber seals or grooves worn in the shaft where the seals run. Or they are made of older materials.
Many new cars come from the factory with synthetic oil.

From chemical base stocks, not petroleum.
Those are true synthetics.

That page has more contradictions than dogs have fleas.
First they say PAOs are synthetic based.
Then the contradict themselves.
Then they say they aren't biodegradable. They are.
Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips say just the opposite about PAOs.
A Group IV synthetic is a true synthetic made without petroleum as are Group V oils.
