Was surprised this morning when I went to get gas (non-ethanol) for the yard equipment. The Aberdeen marina is now owned by some family from the Middle East. Don't know specifically what country or any other details. Seemed nice, but could have done without the music blaring over the outside loud speakers. They still sell booze in the marina liquor store on the property, although prices have gone up.

Aberdeen, MS is a very small rural town, so I'm kinda wondering what might have brought recent immigrants here, instead of to a larger city. The marina ( 33°50'18.59" N 88°30'43.26" W ) provides boating access to the TennTom waterway and is a major barge route to the Gulf coast http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee%E2%80%93Tombigbee_Waterway .

Hi,

Just a guess: they felt their chances of achieving "the American dream" are better in a less crowded environment?

I've known at least a few immigrant families who had more than enough of city life in the old country, and have done well for themselves in small town settings. They're hard working individuals, willing to put in the long hours in exchange for getting a piece of the pie, and methinks that ethic pays off for them better outside the city.

You're probably right. At least I hope so. Given the events of the past few years and the media coverage, it's hard to not be judgmental.

I think Rick has it right. I live near the beach in San Francisco, right near the zoo. It's not like downtown, there's definitely a small town feel, except on weekends. There's a corner store and deli which has become a fixture here....George's Zoo.

It's run by Palestinian Christians, and better people never crossed your path. Locals collect there all the time to sit out front and enjoy excellent sandwiches, salads and breakfast goodies. The only thing wrong with the place is that it's too damn close to where I live! We neighbors consider them family.

Every time I hear of something detestable coming out of the Middle East, I think of this family. The daughters and nieces are going off to college soon....IMO the American Dream still lives, at least here in San Francisco's Outer Sunset district.

Who's enjoying a hot pastrami brisket with pepperoncini and Provolone on sourdough as he types...
