Today was my grocery shopping day. I usually get to the grocery store around 6:30 a.m. or so to do my week's grocery shopping. And most of the customers are older folks like me.

Well, there is this one man whom we have not seen for over six weeks. None of us knew how to contact him, and as hard as she tried, the cashier could only find out his last name, which none of had known before. He's a retired fireman, in his nineties, and lives alone. I told another of our clique that I was afraid we had seen him for the last time.

But this morning, lo and behold! There he stood, propped on a cane and a grocery cart and a bit wobbly, but still alive and standing. We embraced in a bear hug, not once but several times! He told me he just couldn't get going and get out of his chair. He had lost weight, and is losing his teeth. And he has no telephone so we can't call to check on him. We might get him one of those pay-as-you-go phones.

He's Catholic, and did make the sign of the Cross as a blessing to me. We were all so glad to see him back and among the living, as most of us had feared the worst.

Good feeling!

Good for him and your group. Funny how grocery stores can be a social meeting of older friends. Retired sister in-law just started work part time a grocery store.. She has reconnected with so many old acquaintances.

Not a reunion but got a Christmas note from a friend who we haven't heard from for several years. He's 88, bikes 30 minutes each day, 50 push-ups and 50 sit-ups each day. I'm 72 and just started the gym and am out of breath after 45 minutes on the bikes!

Wow Bob 6:30am food shopping, I didn't know they even had all the food out at that time of morning. Always good to find out folks are still getting around.

Kroger doesn't even have the reduced for quick sale meat out at that time:-) The meat department isn't even opened.
Besides I would look pretty Stoooopid shopping in my skivvy shorts.

Glad you saw your friend again.
Why not ask where he lives and go take him some dinner some time?

You know, I've broached that subject before and he's sort of avoided that so I just keep hinting. But nobody at the store seems to get anything like that from him.

farmers in muck boots go to walmart in sc mo and they all hang out and chat about herds around the meat section. it seems to be a friendly midwest cultural experience thats pretty normal.
as is meninites shopping with tractors pulling covered trailers.

there should be some folks either from his church or such checking up on him.

A phone is not a bad idea but there comes a time when folks can't even manage a phone let alone one of these new ones.

he needs, and may already have, some people who come by every couple of days and see if he's okay. If there is any way to find out about this I would do it.

Maybe find out where he lives and see if it's ok to drop by occasionally. Maybe invite him out to the ranch to sit around the campfire or something. Maybe fishing. It's easy to get isolated and loose your will to do anything. I hardly want to get out of my chair for anything that doesn't make me feel alive because sitting in the chair usually doesn't hurt. But I will take an agonizing day out on the boat or motorcycle or spending time with friends every chance I get. I always hear "You can go out and do xyz with so and so but you can't do crap around here." I just have to prioritize what makes me feel alive. Most say it's stupid and dangerous to do some things alone when nobody else is available but what better way to go than living. Finding a reason to escape the chair keeps getting harder!!!
