I picked up these elephant ivory grips recently. The are a good fit on this Super Blackhawk that shipped in December 1959. I plan on sending them out to have Ruger medallions installed in each panel to complete the package.

I have been considering the location of the Ruger medallions and am leaning toward the location on XR3 factory ivory grips. However, I would appreciate any input on this. Thanks.

Let us know how it goes with having them installed, I have a set of Ivories on an engraved Super and would like some early medallions...but am a little afraid after seeing that one thread about "Repairing a set..that had split..thru the holes...it could be the grain and also they may have dried or been to tight or a combination..
They just look correct with the medallions.

They need the emblems don't listen to JOHN

I think the xr3 position would look right...

We all know how many arguments emblem placement has caused

Your gun and stocks....do what ever you want DOC....RR

RR is right about the emblem location being a flashpoint on ivory grips. So much so that I gave up trying to secure a set of factory ivories due to conflicting ideas of where the emblems should be placed and whether grips were factory or "home factory" built  I just switched to custom ivories I order form grip makers and leave it at that. Much less stress on an old guy like me! :D

You could put them the same place as the XR3 grips had them. That would put them close to the top and front edge and there would be a possibility that the grips may crack doing so. As there were no factory Ivory grips for the Super Blackhawk then you could put them where the factory puts the Medallion on it's walnut grips and lessen the chance of splitting the grips when you stake the birds. No one could fault you on placement as the factory didn't use Ivory grips for the Super.

What ever you do those grips need an Eagle in them and I would search till I found a set of the "Skinny Necked Black Eagle Birds". Anything else would be an insult to that fine Super.

The grip panels and the correct Ruger medallions were sent to Nutmeg Sports yesterday. I asked the medallions be placed one quarter inch from the edge of each panel. This is a sixteenth inch farther back than I measured on my factory ivory XR3 panels. I will post the results when the grips are returned.

FWIW, to avoid splitting a grip panel, I no longer stake medallions - I secure them with a small dot of clear epoxy.

Man, I wouldn't do that. Ivory doesn't need medallions.

I'd have to agree. Nobody gets near my elephant ivory with a power tool. One slip and they get ruined? NOt worth it to me, especially when high quality simulated ivory is so available.
That's a beautiful set Bill. I've decided mine are reserved for the first grandchild who proves her/his worth.
