I have a Super Blackhawk with a S47B frame. I confirmed with Sturm Ruger this piece has a brass frame and is a 3 screw model and was shipped from the factory in June 1971. The barrel length is 7 1/2" and has a polychoke vented rib on it. I had been told but again the factory did not verify that a few of these revolvers with the Polychoke rib were sent directly to Polychoke factory. Does anyone out there know more about this particular feature? MoFrank :?:

Now that's a new one on me! Perhaps Polychoke ordered a few Supers from Ruger for their "in house" testing but I wouldn't think that WBR would be buying parts to put on his "best quality" revolver.

You definitely need "provenance"!

Welcome to the Forum!
I seriously doubt any SBH with the polychoke vent rib would be shipped from the factory. Thousands of these vent ribs were added after the fact by customers wanting that "look" on their gun. I have removed several of them over the years. My thoughts; If you have a factory verified brassie, remove that rib & clean the glue crude off. It will enhance the value.

I'm with flatgate.

I would imagine that Polychoke purchased a few guns to measure in order to make the ribs to fit various guns. I'm pretty sure WBR didn't send the gun's blueprints to Polychoke for this effort.

They were relatively easy to install, and as contender mentions they were also relatively easy to remove.

I doubt is was done @ Ruger!

I would have another potential issue with the gun in question in that your S47B would be the first gun that I know of shipped with a brass grip frame in June 1971, or did I misunderstand your leading sentence? I suppose there's always a possibility for an S47B shipped 6/71, but yours would be a first.
So, I guess if it doesn't letter as S47B, then the brass was probably added to it and if that is the case, then the polychoke as well.

As an aside . . . I have always wondered about the "heat transfer" ability of the glue used to affix these ribs to the barrel. The ribs are advertised as "keeping the barrel cool while rapid firing" but I've always been of the opinion that the only "cool" aspect was one of appearance.

"Hey, look, a Ruger Python!!"

And that said, they are a very interesting piece of Ruger ephemera from back in the day. Great nostalgia appeal.
