I received a old model SB box that is in great condition with a long frame that I bought. I would like to sell in classifieds but need help on a reasonable price for it.

Why would you sell the box for a Long Frame? Especially a box as nice as that one.

I would keep it for the gun even if the numbers don't match. You said it is for a long frame. Do you mean that it's for the "Long Grip Frame"? Most of those guns came in a Magh. wood box. If you gun is a long grip frame numbered to that box then you have a one of a kind Ruger. And It's only a one of a kind Ruger if you keep it with that box numbered to that gun. As for a price for your box, RENE list value at $130.00

The gun did come with a Mahogany box the owner just threw that one in with it. It was not the original one to the gun. I have since sold the long frame and the wood box and I have no old model super to go with it.

I agree with Splitz. There are too few boxes out there to go around to worry about a number matching up with a box...and what are the odds of that?? Sure it happens, but ???
Is no different than putting proper paper work (instruction manual etc.) with a gun of proper vintage. Lets face it, whether you never intend to sell your collection or not, these guns are still investments. Somebody is going to sell them down the road. They may as well be as complete a package as possible. And the more complete the packages in a collection, the easier to sell.
We found a cache off five hinged red eagle Standard auto boxes one time from a source in New York. What were we to do, sell them because they weren't numbered the same as any of our red eagle variations? Don't think so!
Now the purists on the other hand (and there aren't that many) wouldn't give a 2nd look at the box anyway.

Boy!!! We collectors are a strange lot. I, having been a collector, will be the first to admit that. First off the bat! We want our Rugers absolutely brand new in the box, never fired from the factory, box in perfectly new condition, with all of the paperwork, and with the shipper. Of course the box and shipper has to be numbered to the gun. Now this is the way we want the gun to be with no exceptions, well, maybe we can deviate ever so slight from that. First I notice that there is a slight scratch on the grips. That OK. I have a like new set that I can put on and then it will be just like new, even though those grips didn't come with that gun from the factory it will still be OK. Now I see a slight rub in the ejector rod housing, but that's OK, I have a like new one that I can put on it and then it will be just like new. It will be OK if that ejector rod housing didn't come on that gun from the factory, it's still the right type. Now I notice that the gun will not hold on half cock, but that OK as I have a new hammer that I can replace the broken hammer with and while I'm at it I will replace the screws with better looking ones. It will be OK if these parts didn't come with this gun from the factory, they still are the correct parts.

Oh! No! I just notice that my brand new in the box Ruger has been "RE-BLUED". What do I do? Yea that's right! I sell the gun for a loss because I will not have a re-blued gun in my collection!!! :evil: :evil: Now it's ok to change out all of those parts and be happy with that, but a re-blued gun is a NO! NO! Even though some Rugers are re-blued before they are shipped from the factory because of defects in the finish. I will not have a re-blued gun. :roll:

Like I said we collectors are a strange bunch. How we can justify changing all those parts, even replacing lost boxes with different serial numbers on the box, but not to accept a re-blued gun, just doesn't make sense. Like I said we collectors are a strange bunch!!!!! :roll:

After reading all this... the snow has let up... for now... it's about 14-degrees out... think I'd better have a poke at them pots covered in snow on them fieldstones out yonder. I'm not a collector, but my guns like to collect targets.

A lonely .357 Maximum screams at me to at least knock the snow off a rock or two. Hell, might even dust a spaghetti pot.
