was out shooting my sb today and under heavy loads the base pin kept coming out is this a problem I can fix with a new pin or send it back to ruger?

Do a search this is a fairly common and easily fixed problem with the SBH.

The cheapest approach is to replace the base pin latch spring with a Wolf spring. This will keep the base pin latch in place and prevent allowing the base pin to back out.

Another option is the Belt Mountain base pin with the retainer screw.

A very nice product.

Get the BELT MOUNTAIN base pin with the locking screw; fit and install per the instructions. Get the WOLF base pin latch spring too.

Back off on the loads a bit. Your gun, wrists and hands will last a lot longer. Carpal tunnel and other hand surgeries ain't a lot of fun.

The "big name writers" who praised...and used...the hot loads and BIG calibers are re-discovering the 44 Special and 45 Colt AS they pay the price for all that fun.
