I posted this on Facebook under the "You're probably from Memphis if You Remember...." page, and thought some one here might enjoy it as well:

Summer began yesterday. Remember summers as a kid? School was out, and the popsicle wagon came by at least once a day. Sometimes a horse drawn wagon, other times a push cart. Always looked for a piece of dry ice from either one. Grape, orange, lime, whatever, licking it while the colored juice ran down your arm on hot days. Playing corkball in the street, going to the wading pool at a nearby park. Or having an older sibling take you to a real swimming pool, like East End or Rainbow, or what was really swell, Clearpool! Or, just staying home and running through the sprinkler, or maybe when the Fire Department opened up a fire hydrant. Getting a drink of water from the garden hose. ( How do you know a bug hasn't crawled through that?) And those water fountains at the parks that you had to stand on a foot pedal while the water gurgled up from goodness knows where. Stepping on a bee while barefooted? Or getting a cut on your big toe from a piece of unseen glass or tin can? And then walking around with it bandaged like in the comic strip? If nobody noticed, then effect a little limp. Playing out at night and hearing crickets and the buzz of katydids? Playing hide-and-seek- or kick the can? Climbing a tree and being "a voice from above" when an adult walked by? Skating on the sidewalk, and having one skate come loose from your shoe but still dangling around your ankle from the strap? Being towed behind a bicycle at breakneck speed while on your roller skates? Walking barefoot in a flooded gutter after a summer rain? (Good place to get a cut toe.) Sitting on the front porch, eating a tomato, orange, or apple, watching the rain fall?
"Those were the days, my Friend, we thought they'd never end."

Maybe bring back a memory or two.

That's cool, I'm glad you posted it (I don't believe in FB) I remember getting up at six every morning & frying myself a bologna and egg sandwich. I would ride my bike, goof around at the creek & just be a kid. No TV. I was nine. At ten me and a buddy started a lawn mowing business in Navy housing in Florida.Worked all summer, my take was sixteen dollars- I even had a savings account. My stepfather was at sea & Vietnam was raging. The family allotments were always late because of the war. My Mom ended up using my money to get by.

Feet had calluses from going barefoot all the time, go to the beach and burn your instep with the hot sand. Sand spurs berween your toes, swimming in the creek and having to swim under water to escape the horse flies, mosquitoes would eat you alive at dusk, no see ums made life miserable in the shade, deer flies swarmed down by the creek.just as you got to go to the pool a thunderstorm would shut it down. Yep summer time and the livin was easy.

Then there was scrounging crawdads in the nearby ditch (Millington Navy base, TN); running through the woods scaring away all the rattlesnakes and picking fresh blackberries (Navy Housing Yukon, FL), Swimming in the river above the mill dam (Jonestown, PA before going over seas to Morocco) Digging in the sand dunes at the beach and recovering spent rounds (Plage Mehdia near Kenitra, Morocco (Formerly Port Lyautey , were the allies landed during WW2). BUT nothing beat picking the biggest watermelon you could find and floating it in the creek while you swam and then breaking it open and just eating the heart (Grandpa's farm in Oklahoma).
Ah yes; Sweet Memories.

I remember thinking it would never end, then it was September again. Riding bikes, carp and cat fishing in Bear Creek, playing redlight in the dusk under a streetlight, spending hours swimming and paddling around in the boat my father & uncle made us, playing curbball in the alley behind the house. I could go on like everyone else.

Where did all that go? Two words.

VIDEO GAMES.

No need for kids today to suffer all those dangerous activities.

Of course many of us didn't have air conditioning, 150 cable channels and video games to keep us amused. Getting out of the house was the only way to have fun and beat the heat.

Ahh, the stench of the sewers from summer heat in NY.. Now that brings back memories..
