Some 15 years ago I worked with a surgeon from the Middle East and he came to work one morning telling about the pretty black and white striped cat that he and his wife had been feeding on their back porch.

I recently read about how Japanese people thought raccoons were cute little critters based on a popular children’s story and started importing them as pets. Needless to say they often soon found out otherwise and usually released them. With no natural enemies the population took off and now they are taking up residence in temples and such and basically destroying them and creating a big nuisance.

A TV series checking out urban myths concluded that accounts of greatly oversized rats in New York City were actually sightings of possums by people who didn't know the difference.

Locally, a sighting of "a really big rat" at the far end of the hospital parking lot was actually a muskrat that had come up from the water-filled drainage ditch just across the road.

Wish I could post a picture from my phone of a cute little possum in my KITCHEN!!! I scooped him up in an 8 qt stock pot, and turned him loose away from the house. I used to like Disney, and my critical thinking skills helped me with reality, but hey we are all crazy to some degree? :shock: :mrgreen:

I call it; "Education by Disney"

The new Disney. Their old nature and wildlife films/shows were great. Walt did the animated stories and his brother Roy oversaw the nature stuff.

Walt Disney, and his dismal movie "Bambi", is probably responsible for more of the anti-hunting sentiment in this country than anything else. How many millions of children, generation after generation, grew up to the image of the noble and wonderful deer being murdered by the evil hunters. One of the ironies of that cartoon movie is that the name Bambi is used exclusively as a girl's name while the cartoon character was a male deer.

Disney is not alone in perpetuating ridiculous ideas about animals. Beagles are active, aggressive hunting dogs and can be a great addition to any family that enjoys the outdoors and can give the dog adequate exercise. But Snoopy he is not, yet untold number of Beagles have likely been bought and then disposed of because he wasn't the little lovable, quiet lap dog that Charles Schultz's cartoon Peanuts made people think was the case. And how many ignorant people are around that think that if they raise a baby wild animal in their home as a pet that somehow they have domesticated the animal instantly, only to suffer the consequences when the grown up bear or lion takes a bite out of them.

I agree that the old Disney wildlife shows were much better than what they do now. But as noted,, the Bambi thing,, totally anti-gun & anti-hunting by the portrayal as it being "bad." And more kids relate to cartoons than documentaries.
Truth & facts don't sell as well either.
