Stellar's Jay

Yep, they may be a pest, all of the Jays, but I do appreciate them coming to visit me when I'm up in the mountains. They must not have many enemies, as they are some of the bravest birds in the mountains.

WAYNO.

We are in the foothills along the Columbia River. We get scrub jays as well as Stellar's Jays at different times of year. They can be a pest but I'll leave peanuts out. When we lived in SoCal, we had scrub jays trained to take them from our hands.

Can you come and train mine not to dive at me when I get out of my truck. I know its nesting time, and they obviously have some somewhere close by, but I'm about ready to reduce the population

Hi,

I put peanuts out every morning for the scrub jays. Don't have 'em trained to eat out of my hand, nor do I plan to. They can get pretty demanding when they get THAT friendly with humans. Years ago, a friend had Dutch doors in her kitchen, and made the mistake of training one to come in thru the open top half to get his peanuts off the fridge. Woe the day she did that!

If scrub jays have any socially redeeming quality, it seems to be they keep the mockingbirds a safe distance away. Now those are the guys I've been "attacked" by, along with their habit of staying up all night during the summer to keep the neighborhood in song...
