Those old movies sure were Corney but are fun to watch. I am not much into watching the kiddy types where the hero wears brand new fresh starched spotless shirts and hats in the desert etc. Why does/did hollywood always go overboard each way? Seems late westerns like filming in mud, rain and the characters would make poncho villa back against the wall. Now they love to use far dirtier language than anyone years ago would use.
I would like to see them wear the guns high up and not the busclero rigs flopping on their knees when they walk etc. You look at all the old timey authentic pictures and most cowboys wore vests, shirts didnt have collars, they didnt roll their hats etc. The women are depicted like a hollywood hooker and all old pictures I have seen they worked at not looking sexy.
For a short time in 1965 I was a guard at Universal studios. It gave me a slightly different slant. Some actors were good guys, some not quite so much. I knew a few.
Dang! I just realized that was exactly 50 years ago!

Ever noticed that when watching Gunsmoke (or any western for that matter) there is never any horse sh!t in the streets?

The only movie I have seen that showed horse sh!t was The Outlaw Josey Wales.... where the carpetbagger selling snake oil gets knocked into a pile of it. LOL

The wife and I watch Roy Rogers on another channel (not Starz Western). I haven't seen Roy Rogers since I was a kid. Anyway, it struck me how poor the acting was. Of course, that doesn't take away the fact that the show in its way taught good values. The good guy always wins.

When I was at universal studios there was a old man who walked around shoveling up the horse turds. Someone told me he had something to do with very old westerns many years before that. I got talking to him and found out he had cowboyed up in jackson hole before the Grand Tetons became a national park in 1929. I had worked there in 1961 and we had a old cowboy, "Dewey Van Winkle" who had been the sheriff of Teton County many years before I knew him.
I asked the old man if by chance he knew him. He lit up! He and Dewey had been partners and had rodeo`ed and cowboyed together many years prior, probley around 1915. When I knew Dewey in 1961 I would guess he was in his early 70`s like I am now.
Google is your friend! After posting the above, for kicks I thought I would google him. This picture came up when he was a cowboy in 1917 in the area. 3rd row down, four cowboys standing together. Think I knew a brother of his too named johnny. See there is a brother ollie in the picture too.

The Starz Western Channel keeps playing the same movies over and over again. Their play-list gets updated about once a month. The 'Magnificent Seven' and the half dozen 're-makes' get played a lot. I think I see a few new Westerns for January. :?

Check out the 4-6 AM time slot. Many of these are only shown at that time.

A western rerun is better than watching any of the crap on prime time ABC, CBS, NBC.

I don't recall the name of the show last night, I was doing something and came into the den in time to hear my wife say, "That is disgusting!!". I asked her was she was talking about. Her reply was that whatever this show was on one of the prime time big 3 stations had shown two guys who were obviously queer frantically ripping the clothes off the other. :shock:

Just another reason to watch the old reruns. :roll:

Don't know about you fellas but we never miss "Blue Bloods" with Tom Sellick. Course that's on a regular network. I also like "Gold Rush". I know it's probably scripted, but I like to learn how they mine for gold.

"Deadwood" I think was realistic as well. I just didn't care for the language. Not saying they didn't talk that way. Its just a personal thing.

Not that I know of. I just don't and never did like him or his sidekicks, or his singin. Just a personal opinion, and to be truthful I don't care much for any singin western. I do admire Gene Autry for droppin out of show bizness and joining the military during WWII tho.

In contrast I guess that it would tough to impossible to insult the intelligence of someone whose most astute observation of a program is the presence of horse droppings or the lack thereof on the street.

I just pointed out other oddities that I have noticed. But that doesn't mean that its any big deal to me. I still enjoy them. And, don't consider my intelligence to be insulted.

I like both of those show as well, and agree I didn't care for the language in Deadwood, people didn't talk that way in the old west nor did they use the "F" word, I read the producers decided to add the filthy language, as a attempt to simply modernize the profanity of the day for a modern audience, I also think it may be why the show as cancelled.

My dad and granddad as well as other old timers who lived in the late 1800's have said that men as a rule didn't talk dirty around women, even the saloon girls. And that cussing around women was pretty much limited to "hell". Cussing was generally kept between the men. Women that talked dirty were generally frowned upon.

I agree that's exactly how it was and hell or dam was about as dirty has it got, people had better manners in those days then they do now.
