The purpose of the delivery system is to put the warhead on a specific target. if the delivery system is disabled, then the warhead can't be delivered to the desired target. Will it still explode? Hard to tell since the rest of the systems are rendered inoperable. Even if it does explode, it hasn't done so at the selected target. Doesn't mean that there will be no damage, just that the damage will not occur at the target. I believe we say that with scud missiles directed toward Israel. The warheads and missile debris could very well cause damage, but it's still less damage that a fully operable and targeted warhead.

They mention they can intercept mortars. I recall mortar attacks where they landed one about every two seconds or even faster. I question if they can locate and kill them that fast. Maybe with multiple units.
 
It's been tested here at YPG for some time. I'm not involved with that testing, and I couldn't reveal any specifics if I were. FWIW, there's also a flying version of this that's intended to take down ICBMs, SCUDs, and the like.

I've also seen Phalanx gun systems protect against incoming mortars with radar-aimed high-rate 20mm rounds.
Saw mortar rounds that had been hit two or three times. Pretty neat stuff.

The Phalanx system is the perfect marriage of high tech tracking and old school wall of lead.

My Dad worked on that stuff in the 80's for Boeing. But that's all he ever said about it. I know he had a background check that lasted several years before he was authorized to go into those "Black Hole" buildings to work on the project. He had different ID badges for the different areas he worked in so no one knew he worked in multiple areas.

The "black hole" was in reference to all the windows in the buildings being painted with black paint.

The current airborne unit is mounted on/in a 747, IIRC. As technology progresses, I'm sure that it will shrink in size.

Keep in mind that back in ancient times the programmable calculator took up an entire room and now one fits in a purse. This is new technology, at the moment they are just trying to get it to work... Later they can work on the other little details.
