I just got a 1974 Ruger 22 automatic pistol. Likely paid a bit too much but it belonged to a guy I shot with and his widow needs the money ($230). The pistol is in good condition, no major flaws. It is very accurate but shoots low. No matter the brand or bullet weight, it's low. My question is what are my options? I'd rather not file the original front sight, rear is not elevation adjustable. Are there after market adjustable rear sights available?

Another question, only got one mag with the pistol. What's the best source for additional mags?

Thanks

You didn't pay too much.

Is a 1974 a MkII? If so https://www.volquartsen.com/tags/10-mkii-mkiii-pistols,25-scopes-optics-sights

Internet is the source to find the best mag price. Get a genuine Ruger one.

It's not marked Mark 1 anywhere so I assumed it's a Standard model. Front sight is a blade that's pinned. Rear is in a dove tail. No adjustment screws but can be drifted left or right

Welcome to the Forum!
You are correct in calling it a Standard model. 1974 will put that gun having the same action features as the MKI. Original magazines were 9 round, not marked, and had a chrome base. You can use MKII magazines just fine with it. If you get MKII magazines,,, you might have to swap the follower button to the other side, and that's easily done.

Adjustable sights.
You have a couple of options. You can try & locate a spare front blade, file it & keep the original one.
Or, there is an aftermarket set of adjustable sights made by Ram-Line (I think) that you could try to find. The Ram-Lines have been out of production for a while. I think Millett also made a replacement set too.
I actually have a set of replacement sights by Ram-Line around here,,,,,, somewhere. I had posted them for sale once, and nobody needed them so they went back into my stuff. I'd have to do some digging to see if I can locate them again if you were interested.

Those are your options.

very good pistol and at a very GOOD price.....
there are rear ,adjustable sights from Brownells or maybe even Midway that are called 'LPA" and work on the "standard autos" fit that dovetail.....good luck and enjoy it.

as for filing the front sight, have someone try it, see if it's YOU , or the gun,,,,,I would simply carefully file the front down, neatness counts...other wise just RAISE your sight to 'mid target' ..we do

Weigand offers a no drill no tap scope mount for 50 dollars.I have it on my older rst 6 and it's excellent. Allows you to mount a red dot or any optic.

Thanks for all the replies and info. Given me a few directions to look into. I've just started shooting Bullseye matches at a local club. Looking down the line of shooters I may be ahead purchasing a Ruger target model and keeping this one for plinking around with on the farm.

Mag that came with it has a Chrome bottom and holds 9 rounds. Got a new mag at Cabela's to try. If it works I'll get a few more.

Glad to know I didn't pay too much, was thinking it was only worth $175-$200. The fellow helping her sell was a lifelong friend of the deceased. Told me he is trying to get top dollar to help out the widow so I assumed it was pricey.

1974 is the A100 grip frame. You can buy and use "as is" Ruger Mark II magazines and have an 11-round shooter, 10 in the magazine, one in the chamber. Here's a picture of the LPA (Low Profile Adjustable) rear sight. In some cases you might need a slightly higher front sight blade. For this particular pistol, I did not.

Dad had two Ruger .22 auto pistols when he passed away. A NIB standard model and a 6.8" Mark I that we found in a pawn shop in the early sixties. He lost the original Micro rear sight years ago. I called Ruger. The nice lady said that they ran out of Micros years ago but the current issue rear adjustable sights fit and worked just fine. A low twenties price got one shipped to me. I suspect the dovetail is the same on the standard model. You would need a taller front as well.

This one works great on both series of fixed sight Rugers:
