Stag questions

I recently purchased a nice 4" Security Six in Stainless with stag grips. They look quite nice, but I have questions & concerns and need to hear some experienced voices please.
First time as a stag owner so I am learning a lot in a short amount of time.
1. Is there a definite way to tell if these are made by Ruger? I believe these may have been added later, so a factory letter might not give me details. I have not pulled them off yet.
2. How delicate are these in real-life woods carry, shooting, etc?
3. I like them but I'm not 'married' to them at this point. Haven't shot the gun yet so I don't know how they'll feel. Knowing that everyone is different, and grips are all different too,
how many of you prefer the feel (not the look) of the stags when shooting?

Pretty sure Ruger didn't put any stag grips on a Security Six from the factory.

I wouldn't be to concerned about carrying and shooting with them on. Should hold up fine.

I like the looks of them and they feel OK to me. These are just a couple that I have. We need some pictures of that Security Six.

Stag is a tough material. Much moreso than many of the synthetics in use. Like ivory, its original owner fought his rivals with it.

Regarding 'feel' - that depends a lot on how much bark is on them to obtain a better (non-slip) grip. I have Stags on a 1911, but only for special occasions, not regular use. What does the other side look like?

Two Rugers with India Sambar Stag. Neither are factory grips as far as I know although the Bearcat grips are likely from same time frame as the revolver.

That's the trouble with stag grips, none feel the same. I have never cared for stags, look nor feel, although they can have some character.

As to feel, I don't care for a lot of texture, or "bark" as it is called, especially on big bores. The ones on sceva's Speed Six above are about right.

yes, its the looks ,not the feel, kinda like trying to hold onto a wet alligator at times
...but makes for a nice 'barbeque' gun, if you like to "pimp your ride"

I don’t think Ruger has ever made their own grips, stag or otherwise.
They almost certainly did not for a double action.
Stags never did anything for me. Don’t care for the look and the feel is either slick as snot or rough as a cob.

And no, a factory letter will not help UNLESS they were designated as “Big Grip” for the targets or “-R” for the rubbers ~ think I said that right. RENE will tell you for sure.

You liking them is all that matters though!

Stags on a Bearcat
There is just something about Stags that I absolutely adore

I had a stainless Colt Government Model 380. It came with the black rubber looking factory grips. I put a set of Sambar stags on it and it fit my hand like it was purposely built just for my hand. My wife wanted the gun, but not the grips. The factory grips fit her like she liked.

I like the feel of Stag grips. Sack Peterson signs the inside of his grips and does a fantastic job of meeting your expectations. I wanted my grips to be a little thicker than the stock grips to help soak up the recoil of full house .357's ... that's what i got. Well done.

I am 99.999% sure that Ruger never put stags on either the Six series DA's, the GP-100's, Redhawks and Super Redhawks, SP101's and LCR's. (But with Ruger you NEVER say never ) For the Six series revolvers if the Model # ended with a "T", that meant it was shipped with the oversized wood "Target" grips and if it ended with a "P" it was shipped with the rubber Pachmayr grips which could be large or small (compact like on the Speed Sixes). On the GP-100 if the model # ended in HG, that meant it was shipped with the rubber Hogue grips.

I have never seen factory stags made for the DA revolvers.

Now,,,stags to me,, look great for exhibition. Most,, for shooting recoiling handguns,, not much in the way of comfort. But they do harken back to a golden era of handguns.

But the shotguns,, WOW!!!!!!!!!!! I have handled some of the exhibit Perazzi shotguns at SHOT a few times,, and they are the best looking & sweet feeling shotguns I've ever seen. Jussbad's are right there with what I handled! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many years ago I did the same thing your doing except with .357 Flattops. I enjoy looking at your TY1 Flatgates and the stags juss add an extra zing. Keep on keeping on.
